The terrible fps is only relevant in VR. Its impossible to maintain 90fps which in VR is critical, and not possible regardless of your graphics settings. If you are racing on monitors, enjoy your rain or night time racing, for us in VR, we need a fix!

I found AMS2 pretty damned well optimised for VR tbh... especially with this: FSR for OpenVR

For sure there are scenarios in VR that will hammer any system but the same can be said for any sim - you should try ACC.... looks loads worse and worse performance in VR.

AMS2/PC2 and iRacing are really positive experiences VR wise compared to the competition but you have to accept some scenarios just are not possible yet.

Im running at 100% resolution (3172x3100 per eye in Steam VR) and mostly have consistent 90fps in day time races with a load of high settings in game. If I want to do Long Beach at night with rain - for sure it will fall apart though - I just have to be prepared to lower settings when that is what I want to do.

It only makes sense to turn on headlights at night or in foggy condition, not raining in daylight. I don't know about you but I don't ever turn on my headlights while driving in the rain in real life. So I was surprised to see all AIs headlights on...I mean it's not like you can't see where you're going...there's freaking light outside in broad daylight.

The Night/wet/light problem is well known/discussed on here across a number of threads (quick search - Why does Wet / Night racing absolutely CRUSH my VR frame rate) - personally it's no. 1 on my wishlist for priority... but hey, that's me :)

For me and other VR users, it means if you have 2 choices:

    1. Set up for best gfx and accept the fact you'll need to change them (come out the game, change steam SS% generallly) per race conditions or...
    2. Go to lowest denominator for all conditions - meaning you'll have a sub-par dry/day race experience.

Neither are ideal... and with the game so beautiful I find myself doing option 1 - which is sad when a key standout for AMS2 is the weather system.

Everything I've seen posted (and that I agree with) points to the compounding of lighting from numerous car headlights into your cockpit causing massive computational overhead which kills fps. If you're at the back of the pack, no probs.... if you've multiple cars behind you it's a killer... at the start of a race it's worse, but eases as the pack spreads... so for me it has to be the lighting.

@CrimsonEminence provided an update that the team are aware, but there's no silver bullet, only ongoing optimisations. (any more detail here would be welcomed!)

My suspicion (happy to be corrected proven wrong) is because it's deep in the madness engine gfx code, it's not something Reiza have the in-house skills for and would need SMS assistance (which I'm assume they get in some form from the licensing of the engine deal) to work on. The only other gfx improvement I've noted from the engine has been the addition of the ultra shadow settings. Therefore it's probably 'hard' to unpick and needs specialist help... but boy do I wish I'm wrong!

I'll continue to cross my fingers here... but not sure if there's much more we can do to help bump it up the list? @Renato Simioni

    1. Keep in mind, I'm running an ultra-super wide monitor (5400x1440) at 120 fps solid. That is my minimum requirement.
    2. Most of my settings are on ULTRA
    3. I made a conscious choice to favor ULTRA settings in 99.99% of races and accept have massive FPS drop in thunderstorm/rain/smoke/volumetrics combo at night since I basically never use such combo. I like night and sometimes, so rain... but avoid this unique worse combo like it's COVID.

You should. It's not about you seeing where you're going but about being seen better by others. Rain won't make you invisible, but you're easier to see when your lights are on.

I assume that the 4 dislikes in my post are people who never open a 3D software or a game engine to do polygon optimization or make volumes and particles work in real-time (at 100+ FPS)

You guys are missing the point. Find another sim racing title that does well with thunderstorm, fog volume, rain, and trail particles, wet road reflections, drop in windshield, shadows, DOF and bloom all at once at 90 fps. It's wonderful for creating non real-time marketing screenshots, but it's a technical road-block that will most likely never work in real time for sim racing, until the RTX 8090 comes out in 2050.

Might as well ask, how come all of my games don't look as good as Pixar's films? It's because one frame can easily take 1 hour to render or compute, and now you're asking the GPU to compute 90 frames per second!!!! You can't "fix" those type of real world compute issues at the cost of visual fidelity. Turn down all your settings to the lowest possible setting, and I doubt this awful combination would work well.

As a user, you have to decide high quality settings in most my races or good FPS in 1 rare racing scenario. There is no "fix" for such decision.

Did the Reiza boys work on the AI aggression? They seem much better now, not overly aggressive like they have been. Very good now

The massive frame rate drop in VR comes when it rains during the middle of the DAY time. The moment the AI turn their lights on BOOM , instant frame drop sometimes dropping 30% with only 1 extra condition... . RAIN causing AI to turn headlights ON (During the DAY.. let me repeat.. DAYTIME!!!!!!). Not talking about trying to run thunderstorm at night. You don't even play VR so you are not even aware of the drastic impact of just adding RAIN during the middle of the DAY. We have already suggested there is some issue with AI turning headlights on because the drop is not as bad when racing cars that have no headlights. The drop is worse the further up the grid you go (ie, the more cars behind you, the worse it gets)

Thats why people keep disagreeing with you because you keep raising some straw man argument! Toy Story!?? What on earth. Go play Forza Horizon 5 then come back and tell us how impossible these things are.

Maybe you could do us all a favor and let us raise our concerns and request for investigation without incessantly coming in and posting "nothing to see here".

Where I live it's a law that you need to have headlights on in the rain for this very reason

I have some feedback on the Copa Trucks. I took them for a race around adelaide and it was fun to chuck them around this tight street track. Here are my suggestions for some further improvements, since they were given some love in recent updates but are not 100% perfect yet:

    • The temperature guages don't work yet, or are fixed to 80 degrees.
    • 1st gear is the exact same speed as 2nd gear, making this gear pointless.
    • I liked the h-pattern shifting animation on the mercedes truck, but i tried the MAN truck and the driver seemed to be moving the shifter in a h-pattern, even if the shifter looked like it was just forwards/backwards like a sequential (it may be accurate, someone here might know)
    • At the hairpin at adelaide, the trucks had a habit of completely cutting the corner. Ik they probably could do that, given the size of the tyres, but it feels like they should get a track cut warning for this.
    • Adjust chase cam so the player can see where they are driving (make it taller)

Its a law in many countries around the world. What surprised me is that its apparently a law in some countries that dipped beams must be on during winter months, even during the day and in good weather.

Gear 1 has to be disabled, just like in AMS 1 and F-truck 13, but still a thing to do.... In real life first gear is also disabled. Use 2 for coming out of the pits and then use 3 4 5 6 for racing

Trucks are not made for Adeleide, and vice versa, lol.

And in some countries even during summer months too - all year round. It seems pointless but removes the risk of people not switching them on when they really should (dusk for example as the term itself is quite vague or during gloomy dark day with heavy clouds).

How do I advance the session? I watched a few videos on AMS2 server hosting and didn't see that functionality. I'm pretty well versed in hosting servers for AMS1 and rF2, so I wouldn't be opposed to doing that. I just want to know how to skip sessions and what not before I set everything up.

Look left and right should be instantaneous like looking back. Looking left and right while doing 300kph and entering a corner is not working at all.

Haha ok, but that doesnt mean its not fun. Also super stadium trucks raced there irl and in ams1. Indeed I booted up ams1 to check on the formula trucks and yeah, gear 1 is disabled and the gear indicator starts at 2.

I have HP G2 Reverb along with 20 years+ of experience in rendering technologies and many awards to prove it, but people like you refuse to understand that a huge amount of rain is a natural FPS killer and there is no natural "fix" for it, but keep wasting your time asking for such improvement...

Moving on, nothing to see here...
