Any AM3+ system users?

Thinking about upgrading my.motherboard and ram on my aging system. I am running an AM2+ board with 8 gb of DDR2 Ram. Thats the most my board can run. Was thinking of getting an am3+ board and 16 gb of ram. Do you think that will allow me to run AMS2 on high or ultra settings? I have a Phenom II X4 970 processor, and an hd 7950 3gb video card.. i can run Ams2 on medium setting ok, but would like to be able to turn up the eye candy. Thanks in advance for any help.

 

Your system is way to old. A new motherboard and more ram will not do much for performance. The GPU only has 3GB VRAM. Just save more money for a new PC!

 

I would buy a new card too. My question is about using an AM3+ motherboard and DDR3 ram. Would there be much difference performance wise against an AM4 board and DDR4 ram? Would be getting 16 gb of ram. My processor is Amd Phenom 2 X4 970 at 3.6 ghz.

 

Yes, there'd be a pretty big performance difference. Even the top end of the FX series (AM3+) is going to be beaten by a low end Ryzen 3 (AM4).

I'd say, look at the new ryzen series. Definitely with little money to spare, the 3300X is at 120 dollars competing with the 7700Kfor example. Also this year the 4th gen ryzens are coming out if you have more money to spare. GPU has the AMD side, which is cheaper, but had some driver issues, so a 2060 would be great value as well. If you have more money, get something better so it can run longer before it gets too slow for games.

Well, I ordered my new system. AMD Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1660 Super 6 gb, WD M2 500 gb SSD, 16 GB DDR4 3200, Win 10 home retail. I think it will be fine since I will only be running 1080P. thoughts?

 

Check also my specs, my machine is from summer 2012 but the GTX1080 (it was a GTX670 originally). I run AMS2 ULTRA 60fps 1920x1080 no problem.

FX8320 OC 4.3 liquid
8 gig of hyper x ram
zotac 1050 ti OC
It works quite well in medium detail with some compromises but in any case I only use fullHD at 60 FPS
So the problem doesn't exist
An RX580 is coming

 

You'll be able to run at 1080p, on max settings and should get like 100fps with that no problem.

That's a nice system, even with the tech moving fast.
I built my kids the same PC's each last Christmas just before pricing went stupid, B550 boards, GTX 1060 6GB GPU's, and the Ryzen 3 3100 CPU's. The CPU is unreal for the money (As is the 3600) and their systems can now be upgraded all the way up to the 5000 series. (If they keep behaving!)

Because on my pretty weak/ancient system Im able to max almost anything out in AMS2.

as long as you do not use VR or tripples, AMS2 is running good on acient systems.
Unfortunately my C64 is always runing out of memory with Windows emulator
