Vital Gamepad Option Missing - Speed Sensitivity Unadjustable

    Hey guys,
I've just bought Automobilista 2 and tried it for a few hours - I think it's absolutely great, with excellent content combined with everything that Project CARS 2 did right (which was, to me, especially the good lobby system, and the gamepad support).

However, I have one problem that has the potential of destroying the game for me personally, as I am a pad user:
Project CARS 2 had the option to adjust the speed sensitivity. Speed sensitivity means that, as the speed increases, you have less amount of turn-in available. Which is reasonable, to a point, because gamepads aren't as precise as wheels.

However, Automobilista 2 has very restrictive speed sensitivity that results in massive understeer for every single corner, especially hairpins - there's simply not enough steering lock available.

If there was a slider to adjust that, like Project CARS had, this would solve this issue immediately, but I can't seem to find it. Every other gamepad adjustment slider that was there in pCARS2 is also present in AMS2, which I'm infinitely thankful for, but this vital one is missing.

Maybe I've just overlooked something; in that case I'd be very thankful to be shown what to do.

If not, have you guys removed this option? Are there any plans on adding it in the near future? I know pad support isn't high on the priority list for AMS2, understandably so, but it would make all the difference to pad playability, and it should already be built in the game engine.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Here's a video of me driving 'round Azure Circuit with a pad. The problem becomes especially apparent at Casino, Loews, and Rascasse - the driver simply doesn't turn in as much as he should.

(Hope this is the right place to post this.)

I'm hoping Reiza's development of gamepad support is still at a basic stage because I find it virtually undriveable at the moment and certainly not enjoyable. For me, the biggest issue is the choppiness and over-sensitivity of the steering, which desperately needs to be smoothed out to have a nice smooth analogue feel.

Steering with an xbox360 controller in AMS1 was as good as I've ever experienced in a sim - it is pretty much perfect imo, even the rumble effects are somehow convincing as a FFB substitute - but I'm not sure how much of this is down to the use of the rFactor engine in AMS1 (the steering in AMS1 feels very similar to rFactor, but even better).

Personally, I never got anywhere near a decent steering feel on Pcars2 and gave up on it in the end. At the moment, AMS2 still feels a lot like Pcars2 to me but I'm hoping Reiza will eventually work their magic on this to get as close to AMS1 feeling as possible.

Incidentally, in case you hadn't read it in Renato's FAQ sticky post, Reiza say this about gamepad support in AMS2, which is what keeps me reasonably optimistic:

Does AMS2 work well with a gamepad or keyboard?

While our core focus is on simulation and these usually demand a higher range of analogue control, we intend to make AMS2 accessible and enjoyable to all racing game fans.We believe AMS1 has great gamepad support and we intend to match that with AMS2.

Have you tried setting up your pads as custom controllers?

I have - I found it to be identical to setting it up as an xbox One controller (the only other gamepad preset available). I also tried setting it up as a steering wheel, to see if I could use the "calibrate steering wheel" option on my analogue stick, but it doesn't work.

First of all, thanks for your answer!

I know this particular problem was the case for most people. Personally, I thought that I could feel the grip levels perfectly, but that is very much something I'm almost alone with. It did, however, lead to me reducing the speed sensitivity by a large margin, which resulted in a very twitchy, very responsive car that had most of steering lock available almost all the time.

AMS2 sadly feels like a bus in comparison, especially when turning into corners.

Do you know whether AMS1 supported the option to adjust speed sensitivity? Because I'm pretty sure rFactor did, too (didn't play that too much), and considering the FAQ sticky post, that would be a very encouraging sign.

Yeah, AMS1 does have a steering speed sensitivity option but I generally have it set high (70%-80%) so it rarely kicks in. The only time I felt it kick in was when going at about 190mph down the long straight coming off the hill at Bathurst when the car wouldn't turn in enough to take a gentle bend, so I had to reduce the setting for that car.

But your problem seems to be you're not turning in enough, which sounds almost like the opposite of what steering speed sensitivity does (at least as I understand how the setting works). I thought the idea of the setting was to prevent the car twitching around too much (ie. it reduces your steering sensitivity) at high speed whereas at lower speeds, the steering speed sensitivity wouldn't kick in, allowing you to turn in sharply to corners. Or do you mean that you think there is a setting for this that may already be on in the background and you want to access it so you can reduce its value?

For me, the problem with AMS2 is that the cars react too much to every slight movement in the controller, even with damping set to maximum and sensitivity set to minimum, so it's all very choppy and twitchy. It all needs to be smoothed out - this is something which SMS never did with Pcars2 so it may be that Reiza will need to add additional parameters to the steering for controllers to make it anywhere near as good as AMS1.

Dicra, something else I meant to ask/suggest - have you tried increasing the steering lock in the cars' set ups, particularly for Monaco?

The last sentence is exactly what I was trying to get at. It's definitely already on, otherwise I'd have the full steering range available all the time, which isn't the case. The steering range increases the lower the speeds get, which is exactly what speed sensitivity does. So it has to be on, and set to some high default value.

If speed sensitivity is set too high, not turning in enough is exactly the result it yields. For example, in pCARS2, with a high speed sensitivity value, the last turn at Long Beach is nearly impossible to make, whereas you can turn in just fine when the value is low.

I've also noticed that these two sliders don't seem to make that big of a difference. Have you tried increasing the steering deadzones? It's a workaround solution with several negatives, but it might help you out.

I personally like it that way, that's also why I enjoyed pCARS, but it's something that's very hard to get accustomed to, so I get where you're coming from here.

No, I didn't, thanks for the advice! Only played around with the gamepad options up 'till now.

Just tried it around Adelaide and Jerez - applying 26,0 degrees definitely helped a lot, and decreased my laptimes by three seconds immediately. There's still some adjustments to be made, and it's not a perfect replacement for the slider, but it's a LOT more enjoyable.

    Thanks again!

Yeah, I'd tried that but all it seemed to do was move the choppiness and over-sensitivity to a different part of the analogue stick input. To be honest, I'm not expecting to enjoy this game until Reiza specifically address gamepad support. They are obviously focussing on FFB and other issues at the moment. Until then, I'm happy playing AMS1.

    Cool, glad it helped.

Totally agree, it's very necessary to be able to adjust this parameter (speed sensitivity) in the same way that can be done in PC2.

I would add to this the need for the visual animation of the steering wheel to be real. In AMS1 the steering wheel rotation animation was total, but here it behaves the same way as in PC2. If a car has 2 complete turns of the steering wheel (720º) I want to see those two complete turns of rotation on the screen.

For those of us who play with a pad, the visual reference of the steering wheel turn on screen is very important.

These two deficiencies make me leave AMS2 aside, I will return to it if both things are solved. I don't have space to put a steering wheel and with a pad I don't currently enjoy AMS2.
