Can the shadows be fixed?

I know it's been this way since the start, but the shadows in AMS2 are just awful. They are jagged and ugly, and the cascading shadows along the sides of the tracks doesn't help either. Turning them off entirely, the graphics look great - but the environment really suffers without any shadows at all.

I've heard it's a problem with the game engine and may never be fixed, is that really the case? Or are there potential fixes that could be applied, but it just (understandably) isn't a priority yet?

I made this thread before AMS2 was released knowing the same issue was in pC2 so if you could add your name to this thread also.

As you can see it has been a very active thread with over 15,000 views Screenshot (613).png with a little input from Reiza with hope in the form of a possible solution hinted in post #32.

I initially thought it was a AA problem that bothered me but as you said and was pointed out in my thread that the shadows aliasing is the real culprit, but that is really only half the issue as night time shows the other weak spot in the form of aliased reflections when headlights shine on the car in front , also discussed in that thread .

    Anti aliasing

I forgot to mention the only "workaround" ive found to the shadows jaggies is to always run heavy cloud in all sessions , surprisingly it still looks sunny but the shadows are no where as dark and dont look as jiggered.

Play in 4K and it will not be much of a problem.

Unless something changed from pC2 then 4k makes very little difference to AA in the Madness engine! I played pC2 on a 40" 4k monitor and made quite a few posts back in the pC forum back then.

Should have said: "Play in 4K on a 27 inch monitor". Of course, if you play on a low PPI 4K display it will not help much.

I had people tell me that if you play in 4k you don't need AA at all !! lol , A 55" 4k TV has the same PPI as a 1080p 27" ;) I've never seen a 27" 4k monitor in the flesh but can imagine it may look rather nice but i cant play on a screen that small ! I have 3x27" screens and just cant play on the middle single and no matter the resolution, its just too small imo .

To each their own I suppose, with different priorites. Some people can only play in VR. Other find 60Hz monitors unplayable, etc. I could not bear the low density pixel mess that is 1080p @ 27". And yes, AA is needed even at 4K.

I went from 55" 4k to VR (CV1) to single 40" 4k to 27" 1080p triples and i'm by far happiest with the "low density pixel mess that is 1080p" x3 with my 171 degrees horizontal FOV ;) I sit 56 cms from my eyes to screens and it is freaking amazing  even after having the 110 ppi of the 40" now down to the 81 of the 27's i'm totally sold on this setup .
I would obviously like more pixels but 1440p triples are still to much for even the 3090 in some of the titles i play . Maybe after 4090 is here i will get 3x 1440p screens ;)

Back on topic though , i do find the heavy clouds to work well enough until maybe Reiza introduce RTX shadows into AMS 2

I don't mind the shadows much. I only mind the shadow distance popping. Further down the track: No shadows. As I approach there's suddenly shadows. That's more annoying than jaggy shadows, lol. or the infamous shadow-line when a track has lots of hills and shadows cast on those hills and the shadows aren't being cast fully, when you drive the shadows will popup.

    I play on a 20" 1680 x 1050 screen.:p

This is where RTX Raytraced shadows would make a huge difference in visual qualities...
