Karting AI is too hard.

Hello everyone, dear professional and competitional racers.

I, Sparkster, your newest member on this forum have a problem regarding the AI in Karting tracks, especially when you are in the same class.

Idk... whether it is my poor driving skill or the assists, idk... fact is, the AI there is way too fast and there is no way I can catch up to them.

In other classes like GT 3 however the AI is different, they might be fast on straights but slow on taking corners. In both cases I have set the AI to the lowest strength possible (70).

I have no plan what to do so I have to ask you for some advice or you try to investigate this situation.
    Thanks in advance. :)

    Welcome to this forum, Sparkster!

Can you give one or two examples of a kart and track where the AI is too fast, that would indicate that karting AI is too fast in general?

Personally, I don't think being too fast is a general trend with all karts on all tracks, but rather that some karts are too fast at some tracks. I'll have to do some testing to confirm, but I remember driving at Ortona and thinking that the AI was much faster there than at other tracks such as Interlagos (I don't remember what type of kart it was).

Here are some of my largest gripes about the karting AI in its current state in AMS2:
    • The AI doesn't mind driving over curbs or over grass or even cutting corners that have barriers on the inside, which causes spins and pile-ups. Real-life kart drivers stay away from curbs and track limits as much as possible with only a few exceptions. For example at Speedland, the AI will regularly get stuck on the inside of the indoor hairpin and cause a big pile-up.
    • The AI will swerve in a way that can cause the kart to tip over, even on a straight without any opponents nearby or other outside factors. The Superkarts are particularly prone to do this.
    • The AI can't drive slowly uphill (not enough throttle), so formation laps on Buskerud with anything except the Shifterkart is completely out of the question, since they come to a full stop in the middle of the steep uphill.
    • With a standing start, many kart/track combinations cause the last AI car to drive in reverse for several seconds after the light goes green. Maybe that last AI driver thinks that there is a pile-up ahead?
    • There are many flat-out sections where the AI will lift, such as at Interlagos on the back stretch.
    • AI performance in the wet vs. dry is very different from player performance, even more so than what is the case in other AMS2 classes.
    • Slower kart types, in particular the Rental Karts, are classes that are mostly driven by amateurs, so the skill spread should be large. But instead, the AI are fairly evenly matched in pace, and the gaps in the field are caused by all the accidents.
    • Even though there has been significant improvements both since Project Cars 2 and AMS2 v1.0 three years ago, it's quite depresssing how little has improved with karting AI compared to the AI for most other car classes. It's as if the karting AI has been neglected. (it probably hasn't been neglected, but it reveals that there are technical challenges that makes progress difficult)
Despite all the problems I listed above, I still enjoy kart racing against the AI. The least problematic kart to race against the AI with at the moment is the GX390 Race, but the problems I mention above are still there, just to a lesser degree.

Thank you for the detailed info, although I have the tl;dr issue for this big amount of text.

One example is the Buskerud Long Kart track with the GX390 kart, you mentioned in your reply. If you could try out a race with 70 % AI strength, this would be helpful for newbies like me.

    Confirmed:
    • The GX390 Rental kart AI at 100% skill is way faster than the Time Trial world records at both Buskerud layouts, so it's definitely too fast! And at 70% it's still quite fast and I can only barely beat its lap times with a wheel, and not anywhere near its lap times with a gamepad.
    • The GX390 Race kart AI at 100% skill is pretty much on pace with the Time Trial world records at both Buskerud layouts, which I also think is too fast. But at 70%, I can beat the AI comfortably with a wheel and also manage to beat it with a gamepad if I drive well.
(tested with default setup - maybe a different gear ratio can improve things)

Advice for beating the GX390 Race kart AI at 70% skill at Buskerud Short, even if you're driving with a gamepad:
    • Buskerud Short only has two, maybe three braking zones, and if you're not comfortable on the brakes, you can actually just lift off the throttle and coast instead of braking, without sacrificing too much lap time. Stability is more important than braking quickly.
    • Get on the throttle early out of corners, even a bit before the apex, as long as the kart is stable when you start accelerating.
    • Keep your steering input minimal - not too sharp steering angles, and try to be as smooth on the steering as possible. Steering too sharply will scrub off speed and/or lose stability.
The same advice goes for Buskerud Long, although it has more hairpins, so you lose more by coasting instead of braking. Still, it can be worth trying to coast into hairpins to begin with, so that you get more familiar with the kart feel before you start testing some gentle braking maneuvers.

    Good luck!

The AI is still too fast.
I just want it nerfed, so that I have a chance to win.
EDIT: Not only Buskerud, I think in every track (I drove Ortona 3 for that) the AI is faster in the karting GX390 than me. Yet I have not tried it with the other kart types.

I suck at driving karts...I'll try some of these tips! the AI is way faster than me at 85%. I'll try 70%. I still enjoy just hooning around in last place. The karts are a fun change of pace. Superkarts are insane.
