    Hi!

    Several questions:

    a) Is there a manual for this awesome game? I'd really love to read it as these infos often are a starting point for deeper thoughts on special options a game presents. Where can I find such?

    b) Apart from that, I'd love to know, how exactly the "Boost"-button works. It seems to have different functions in different cars, in some, it has no function at all. I tried a McLaren MP4/4 which has a Boost-button and the HUD presents a blue area next to the RPM-meter. It goes down slowly, if I push and hold the Boost-button and it refills very, very quickly. My car is boosted by pushing it - so what essentially is it?

    c) And is it correct that it refills so fast?

So many questions - where is a manual to answer these? :)

    All the best,
    Herakles

A manual would be great indeed considering the complexity of some of the cars features. Alas, there is no such thing yet. There is a fan-made AMS2 page with lots of in-depth info about the various cars and classes, but is hasn't been updated in a long time, as far as I know:

Ah, I think in the turbo cars of that formula one era the boost button just cranks up the boost pressure to 100 percent for as long as the button is pressed. Not sure if there are any extra rules regarding that feature. One thing to keep in mind - aside from actually keeping the car under control, of course - is that this most likely results in much more engine wear than running a lower boost. If I remember correctly, it wasn't unusual for the teams to completely trash an engine in qualifying by running maximum boost and then switch to a new engine for the race. I don't think anyone would want to do that today with the cost associated with modern F1 engines... :D

Technically speaking, the boost feature is also being used for KERS or other limited-time boosts, so the underlying system usually has a limited duration. The quick recharge is meant to ensure you can always boost as much as you want I think - sort of a workaround for a system that wasn't specifically designed for maxing boost pressure.

To go into more detail about the boost button: For those cars that have it, there may be different rules and mechanics attached to it, which are, unfortunately, not yet explained in the sim itself.

For example, the modern Stock Car Brasil cars (from 2019 onwards in AMS2) use a sort of push-to-pass system that enables a temporary boost of fixed length. It can only be used a limited number of times during races as far as I know and there is a "cooldown" time between each use. Additionally, there is a delay of 3? seconds between pressing the button and the boost kicking in - so plan your boost use accordingly.

For the Formula Reiza the boost button activates KERS for as long as the button is pressed - or rather, as long as you have remaining KERS charge/time for the current lap. Not only is the charge itself limited, but the time during which the KERS can be active as well. The timer resets upon starting a new lap.

The newer Formula cars such as the Ultimate Gen 1 and Gen 2 automatically activate ERS using the throttle. How much electric power is added to the ICE output is dependent on the ERS setting. I think it has been mentioned that the boost button actually works as an override to temporarily set the ERS config to "qualifying mode", but I can't confirm this myself right now. You'll have to try it yourself - if it works, the wheel display readout should indicate the change in ERS modes, though.

Then there's the Formula USA cars... These also have push-to-pass functionality, but I am actually a bit hazy on their specifics right now. They're not my area of expertise, unfortunately. But afaik the use is limited to race sessions as well.

Those are the ones I can think of right now - but I'm sure there are others which have boost functionality of some kind.

I believe it’s @oez who made the website and I don’t think he has updated it since V1.5

Actually, after having a quick look at the site I am positively surprised to see that more recent cars like the Formula Junior and Formula Inter have been added. So it's not nearly as much out of date as I thought. The last time I checked was waaay before 1.5, probably before or around the release of 1.4, at which point the information was indeed quite outdated.

EDIT: Something like this should *really* be in AMS2 itself as some sort of in-game wiki.

Do you guys know why you can't adjust the final drive of the McLaren MP4/4 ? It's greyed out and shows no values.

    I'm just curious.

On some cars the non-function of the final gears is probably because the RL version have no changeable final gear.
But on your McLaren MP4/4 and a lot of other advanced cars the reason is probably just slobby coding (= BUG).:D

I was thinking more along the lines of was it an F1 1988 regulation that final drive was fixed or was it a design feature of the MP4/4? :D

Bit unorthodox to quote myself but I’m unashamedly bumping this up as I’m very keen for an informed reply.

    Anyone?
