Okay, I already maxed out that. I will start blaming the shadows then :D

I reported this issue ages ago (and have probably re-reported it a couple of times since), and I know it affects every VR user, so I am hoping someone has an update about it:

Is there a fix for the massive performance drop that occurs with headlights from cars behind in VR?

I have shadows disabled altogether in VR, and performance hit is still massive, so it has to be unrelated to shadows. My frame rates go from steady as can be to unplayable whenever I pass a car at night :(

Yes, shadows is another problem for the game sadly. In general, in any VR title I always get the best clarity and visuals with a form of MSAA if available, but the performance cost is very high so tweaking is mandatory, while TAA is less taxing but not good for VR in my opinion.

Anyone else having the issue as well, that AMS2 is no longer running with OpenXR & OpenComposite on Quest3. For me it worked until yesterday. Today I can see on my Quest3 that AMS2 is launched, but than screen turns black and I see am egg timer and screen keeps black.

    OpenXR log is saying...

Same, I installed windows (11) update last night + also updated the open composite and virtual desktop, so it was one of those for sure.

(half-life Alyx opened though, so it's not all games).

The reflections - setting helps a bit I think (turning it down). I was able to get it in decent shape by just limiting my fov vertically a lot for example, but it's still significant (but playable, even in the worst of conditions with night + heavy rain).

The limiting number of visible cars feature should get improvements in future (emphasizing the limiting on cars behind), so hopefully that brings improvement to this. Currently it's not really useful

You need to rollback to earlier open composite, I got it working like that.

    These were the instructions:

    1. Supreme — 06/12/2024 4:55 PM
      Commit 43e551a4506880ab1a71b8b9fec2fd7fbb27372f - OpenComposite Builds
    2. [4:55 PM]
scroll to the bottom and click x64/openvr_api.dll
    3. [4:55 PM]
if you use the switcher place it in the Runtime folder and rename it vrclient_x64.dll and delete the old one

so for me, I had to add the downloaded file to the documents > OpenComposite > Runtime > bin (delete the old and rename the downloaded file).

Note, I'm using the runtime switcher

Does anybody know if the game implemented "hidden area mesh" ? I asked at the Pimax Discord if "hiddenMeshVerticalScale" does anything and it appears it doesn't do anything. I set fov limit on Quest 3 via OTT and it gives huge headroom. I'm thinking to switch to a VR headset with DP connection but currently lack of "hidden area mesh" holds me back. Is there any workaround for this on Pimax headsets?

    No, it doesn't implement this.

is there a way to play AMS2 via Virtual Desktop but without SteamVR but OpenXR instead ?

i would rather avoid using questlink and use VD all time, but using SteamVR makes performance in VR unacceptable for me. any suggestions here ?
is there any step by step way to play AMS in OpenXR ? when i run VD, open desktop, open AMS2 via steam and choose OpenXR version it stills opens in SteamVR mode instead. how to deal with this ? many thanks

There is no OpenXR mode when you launch - either SteamVR or Oculus.
You'll need OpenComposite to translate OpenVR (SteamVR) to OpenXR, and you'll also need this mod to stop AMS2 launching in Oculus mode.
GitHub - rodolZ80/bypass-oculus-detector: Windows Library that simulates not having the Oculus service running and having the VR Headset disconnected.

i tried to follow your guidelines however i did not manage to succeed. no matter what, even when i open AMS2 via QuestLink and choose open Oculusu VR in Steam it still runs in SteamVR... what is strange that when i run it over Virtual Desktop performance is totally poor. when i run it over quest link it runs smoothly

tbh ... openXR is no more than a few % perfomance gain vs steamVR.
If i were you i'd check the VD settings ( AV1/HVEC10/H264+ at max bitrate work fine for me) that work for others. I only have rtx cards-expierience in VR :)
And ofc your wireless link to the headset should be as described in the manual - I tried almost anything, but a dedicated wifi6 router is the only setup that gets stutter free wireless VR - for me that is.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
Right now i am in situation that i decided to remove meta oculus windows app i want to stick to Virtual Desktop only. All games are fully playable like f1, ac, acc, iracing, dirt 2 etc. AMS2 however remains unplayable. Even thougj i tried all, i always get strange stuttering ingame and in menus.
Its really pitty i cannot play it. I tried all possibilities, changed all the settings from streamin quality to ingame details all from all low to all highest. No matter what i always get stutters. In flat screen AMS2 i get 250+ fps on highest setting :/
I7 13700k/4090/ pc on ethernet and wifi 6 high end router in room
If ayone has any further suggestions it is more than welcome! Thanks for all the support

Dont get me the wrong way but the tiny bit of tech info you give makes it hard to troubleshoot …
    I need more info :)
Are you willing to share your ams/vd logfiles?
One thing you might have overlooked : disable udp telemetry in AMS2’s system menu

Hi ! You are golden !!! thanks for your attention and support in fact sharing logs is no longer needed. The case was that UDP was sending packets and making game stutter. Turning this off completely solved the case of poor performance. I think it should be widely communicated that when using VR UDP should be turned off :) thanks !

It appears helmet view on VR is broken. Left is cockpit view and the right is helmet view. It can be seen that the frametime went crazy.

It's because of the overlay for some reason. You can disable it, frametimes will return to normal.
