Is there a more important racing mantra than "slow in, fast out?"

Coasting saves fuel and can therefore be useful in endurance races.
    Edit:
    and tires and brakes
    Edit 2:
There are historic cars without engine mapping and LMDH/LMH cars have LED lights for coasting.

You have engine mapping for that. And it probably affects fuel saving much more than coasting.

    I'd say "smooth is fast".

Heard this yesterday from one of the english commentators of the 24h Le Mans race:
Stay out of the pits and don‘t hit anything!

Go floating through the corners as smooth as you can

Don’t ask someone how to take a corner if their tyres are still squealing from the last one.

You can’t win a race in the first corner, but you can lose the race in the first corner

If you want to successfully finish a longer race, I´d suggest to find a stable setup (or whatever for you feels comfortable) and then race at a comfortable speed. Being consistent can bring you quite some places up on the leaderboard, depending on what bunch of people you are racing against. Don´t make it a race consisting of qualifying laps, that would end your race sooner or later (but before the chequered flag, that´s for sure).

And never give up. Me and my mates usually race 60 min races, sometimes 45 mins, some even much longer than an hour. I have seen so many people crashing within the first three laps and pulling the plug - don´t do that. Other people might get into trouble as well. Concentrate and go on racing. It´s not over til it´s over.

You are perfectly right. After going through all three pages I completely forgot about the headline.

    EDIT:
So in short the mantra should be: Never give up.

Walk the track before you drive it.

I'm reading Suellio Almeida's book. Which is very very good.
When talking about cornering he says:
"Entry is cause, exit is consequence."
