Has somebody already tried the Nordschleife in Rennsport? Is it any good? How does it feel?

 

Random general question.

If you wanted to choose between VR quest 3 or getting a medium level full racing rig with gaming seat. What would provide the most enjoyment/best value? Current have heavy duty wheel stand and Moza 5 direct drive wheel with standard pedal set only. Use 55 inch TV or 65 inch TV depending on which one using. Generally do not spend more then 1 hour at a time for any session. Could spend a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday over the duration of the day. Do not really have any goals with respect to being competitive sim racer - even at amature level. Prefere to just have casual good time, while keeping fairly realistic races within my equipment options. Not that interested in entry level sim racing set-up. Except - I am sure would meet my needs. At this point most likely wait until sometime in October before making a decision. My Sims are AMS2, PC2 and ATS.

Well VR is brilliant for sim racing. If I had some kind of DD wheel already and a flat screen I'd get VR first for sure.

In terms of using VR I can drive for hours now, but there was a period of acclimatization when I first got it. The first 10 minutes I did a few laps and felt so nauseous afterwards I was lying on the bed for over an hour afterwards. Then you learn you have to stop once you feel the nausea, take a break, go back in and do a few laps, drive smoothly so you're not spinning around and be very careful with things like changing camera views - any or all of these can trigger nausea.

But eventually you can just drive around how you like, drifting, spinning, whatever. I watch replays from chase cams and so on and it's fine - but I know some people who don't want to go through that, they try VR, feel ill and it's game over for them. Others struggle to accept the lower resolution compared with a nice big screen (but quest 3 you'll be a significant step up from my rift s) - there are definite drawbacks, but, if you can live with those it's sitting in the car vs watching the car on a screen. It's the closest thing to sitting in a car and driving it around Silverstone or Brands Hatch without leaving your house and sitting in the car makes every aspect of driving more intuitive.

That said high on the list of things that improve your sim racing experience is a load cell brake. Thus you might decide, if you feel you can drive perfectly well looking at a screen that the improved brake with an upgrade to your rig works better for you.

Neither decision is bad. Presumably the plan is to eventually have both. I believe the older quest3 128gb model (which should be fine if you only plan on using it on a PC for simracing) you can get refurbished ones from Meta (and Argos sometimes have them if you're in the UK) - it's about £350 which saves you a bit compared with the 512gb version and is a bit of a bargain for good VR imo. Will be better than the cheaper 3S version because you'd get the pancake lenses.
