I have a Quest 3 and use Virtual Desktop with the VDXR version successfully and it looks great. My question is how can I get the Meta Link App to stop running every time I run AMS2? I dont think it is required is it? Secondary question is if I use VDXR as I think I am then why do I need SteamVR running? I dont need to worry about Opencomposite or anything like that do I?

AMS2 doesn't support OpenXR directly, so you have to use Open Composite to make it work.
If you get OpenXR to work (VDXR + OC is displayed in the VD performance overlay) I don't think it matters if the Meta Link App starts running. I just close it before the game starts if I use VD, so it isn't in actual use.

I just got my Quest 3, so I'm experimenting with both Oculus LInk and Virtual Desktop to find out what gives me the most performance.

Sorry to jump on your thread, but this also confuses me. I have a quest 3 but is using VD better than using link and launching AMS2 in oculus mode?

    What are the benefits?

No worries mate. I wish I could tell you the specifics of why VDXR works so good but I cant. It seems to give far superior frame rates and quality than Link and is wireless.I use the SteamVR mode though it doesn't actually seem to use it, lol.. On the flip side I do use a Puppis S1 (prismXR) router to maximize throughput though. That alone made the biggest difference.

Wireless is nice, and if you get OpenXR Toolkit to work you can use foveated rendering which helps with FPS.
But playing with the FOV tangent setting in the Oculus Debug Tools also improves FPS, so it isn’t a simple straightforward answer on what is best.

I’m waiting on a new router to test VD properly, but so far I’m quite happy with Oculus Link.

OK...I'm not fussed about wireless but wondering if it's worth going down the route of a usb to ethernet adaptor and using an ethernet cable and vd, rather than link and a usb

Virtual Desktop is great, but it does have specific requirements. I would suggest anyone thinking of going the wireless route to spend a few days in their Discord. Then you'll know all you need to know and whether your system is up to the task. Myself, I would never go back to cable. No bloated Meta software required.

Discords are such a horrible way to store any customer facing information...

Do they have normally accessible info too?
