Question on changing last name and first name

I can change my last name and first name via the menu button on top right corner inside the game. However, my records on the time trial leaderboard are not updated. The records still use my old name, and my personal best lap time becomes empty as well.

May I know if anybody encounter the same problem? Or, could there be any resolution?

 

It uses your Steam name. You can change that at anytime.

 

Then, what is the use of the in-game name? I tried to change it but my personal best lap time is nullified (as shown on top right corner of the leaderboard table).
