And on the flip side, as a means to winning, by a large margin in many cases. A 'compromised vehicle' driven by all is a leveller, setups aren't a leveller. Simple.

I'm having a hard time seeing how a shorter excuse list is a bad thing.

Not everyone drives the car the same way. Defaults will still have advantages for some, disadvantages for others...and we're right back to the argument that setups give some an advantage. Hmmm. There is a reason there is no fixed setup racing in the real world.

I compete in a spec class IRL. (Solo Spec Coupe / SCCA) While no two cars will be totally identical, the whole point of any spec class is to minimize setup variables between cars so that drivers can compete based on their *driving* skill.

    It's actually a popular concept.

Indeed, there are series where minimal changes are allowed, to equalise the field, ensure closer racing, minimise overheads and expenditure etc.

And this isn't the real World, if it was we wouldn't have half the forces coming through the steering wheel that we do. It's simulated, hence we can create and simulate different things.
Don't get me wrong, I completely see where you're coming from, I used to despise default setups, mostly understeer with no throttle control etc for ease of use/driveability/maybe less experienced players. I've had 3 or 4 seconds out of a setup in timetrials...

But there's something about knowing you're all in the same car, and not having to worry about if you missed a little known setting that gives you 'x'MPH more top end, or massively better cornering grip/speed.

The good thing is, we can pick and choose what we like without spending tens of thousands of pounds to implement any of it.

What a silly thread. If you don't like lobbies without setups don't race in them. Just because it doesn't suit you doesn't mean everyone else that differs is wrong. Why not argue about what cars people drive? "Hey, I don't like lobbies where people drive the blah blah blah car. It's too easy to drive. They shouldn't drive that car in the game".
Having said that, some folks do setup lobbies with only one car type, when there are different makes within the class. Don't like it, leave. Don't all the sims have this option? Have you been ranting on all the forums? I agree the lobby should show if setups are fixed, that way folks can choose whether or not to race there. But to say that there shouldn't be a choice is elitist and delusional. Like your preference carries more weight than someone else's. In real life people have choices. Not so much in your world. I'll take real life, thank you.

Spec class is not fixed setup. Spec classes are not the same concept... For SSC, alignments are legal, different brake pads are legal, tire pressure changes are legal, etc. While it is closer than other spec racing I have seen, it isn't fixed setups.

...and for the comment on not choosing the lobbies, you missed the point. Even the post title has the concern being raised...it feels like too many lobbies are choosing to use this feature. Kind of hard to go to another lobby if they are all using fixed setups. (yes, an over-exaggeration)

I will not drag this on longer, I have made my opinion. Not everyone (or anyone) has to agree. :)

There is one other way to look at fixed setups. Just like real world club racing the smaller the range of adjustments there are the more expensive it becomes pro rata to exploit setup changes. So in a Formula Libre structure you want to go faster, you spend £3,000 on a bigger engine and instantly gain 10% on your rivals. In a formula that only allows limited adjustments you spend £3,000 at the track on testing, taking hours looking for minor tyre pressure tweaks, you also discover brand new tyres give you 0.5% advantage over your rivals so you always use brand new tyres, and etc. You soon rack up more money and time than in an open formula. It becomes a law of diminishing returns.

And I don't think sim racing is so different, you have somebody with all day to perfect a limited range of adjustments they have a massive advantage whether they are a great driver or not. You see it in games where players collect some sort of points to win something that will give them an advantage, the ones without a job have all day to collect the points. If the AMS2 isn't going to have a 'them-and-us' attitude it makes sense to pit your skills based on true skill and race craft not how long somebody has to refine an uber-setup. Time in the game context is a cost to people, either a cost they pay in not doing other things, like socialising, or in going to work and then have no time for the game. It can then also become a real cost in buying setups that you have no time to refine yourself. So strict fixed setup races are a good thing, they equalise the grid and those who may find it better in an open formula can spend all day and all night searching for the perfect setup.

This whole thread is basically moot. There is absolutely no freaking way Reiza would even consider making online lobbies fixed setup only. The exodus would be massive and on the quick. Going stock setup ostracizes more than half the online racers. Contrary to the post a couple above me, most lobbies are not fixed setups. So, you're asking a developer to take it up the wazoo to appease less than half the online population? Surely you jest?

I like rooms with default setups , but I wouldn't want any sim to eliminate the option to have a room that allows the use of tuned setups.

I sometimes join rooms with default as well. I do feel it somewhat evens out the field. But I also join lobbies with setups. I like to test my work on humans. Gauge my setups. We race differently, even if it's slight, against human opponents. AI is predictable. Humans, only so much. I'm on the lower end of setup skill, sometimes I get tips from folks in lobbies with setups. That's priceless.
