I love the trucks but really struggle to get to grips with how to drive them, any tips?

    Forget about gears 1 & 2.
The tracks you choose to race are very important, Maybe start off with Guapore, cascavel, curitiba, donnington as the bigger rounder corners help. Imagine the steering wheel like a flat big pizza that you have to turn instead of a racing wheel that you turn slightly. i have had some fun races in the trucks :D

Watch a few onboard videos to see how the drivers handle the steering wheel and gearshifts, and what corners they take at which speeds. That helped me enormously.

Generally stay in the higher gears, the trucks have enough torque to pull themselves out of corners. Also keep in mind, the trucks are best out of the pits and get worse with each lap.

Not sure if this can be of any use, it isn't my finest work :p maybe for rough brake points and such if you find yourself racing the trucks at Campo Grande. 5 lap race against AI with rain towards the end (it's a shame we can't hear the tyres as lock ups sound cool in the wet :D)

It's important to brake early to avoid locking the brakes and getting understeering. Also turn in early. The trucks are not good for fast turning, their advantage is in accelerating. So try to turn in at slower speed and get on power early with an almost straight steering wheel otherwise the high power will let you go understeering and you have to lift throttle.

Don't race in the wet and if it simulates brake fade as it were in reality then by lap say 10? You may need to start using the truck in front of you to slow down... Legit strategy

me too, after one lap the middle tire temp is cooking (on all 4 tires), outer and inside tire temp. are OK
I don't know if this is a bug (I reported it) or if it's my driving, because with the lowest tire pressure the same issue remains. I didn't found any solution till now. This is sad, with overheated tires you can't racing and therefor I can't use the truck. But I love them, in AMS1 I had so much fun.

I have been trying and trying to wrap my head around these and just can't get them to turn at all. I will be going the same speed as the AI, but it just pushes straight ahead in most turns :) Maybe I am locking the wheels, but I can't hear it in the truck.

    Brake harder. :D:D:D

    I think it's either a brake pressure-thingy
    or the brakes are cold
or you need to calibrate your pedals in the driver menu.
    and/or calibrate ingame too.

Shift bias more to the rear helps a bit in the trucks. I don't think it will change brake distances a huge amount unless you are massively locking the front but helps rotate a bit before you do the rest with the loud pedal.

Brakes on all other vehicles is fine in game. I will play around with it some more.

brake early, maybe 75 - 100 m earlier and move brake bias to the rear. I use about 65 - 68 at the front.
But there's another big and important thing:
I did a race at Cascavel with the trucks. I always have the problem with incredible high middle tire temp at the front (after 2 laps middle temp is about 10°C after 4 laps about 20°C hotter than inside/outside), see picture after 1 lap.
I know, too much steering is not good but to turn around the corner it's not pissible to steer less.
    Then I tried something:
With the beginning of braking I moved the steering a little bit into the corners direction. So, what's the effect? When the real cornering starts wight is already in move and this means the reaction of the truck is much better. It also means that I haven't to steer so much to get it into and through the corner. With less steering there's less understeering and tire heat up. And the corner speed is also higher because of a much more smoother driving (and my front tires are colder).
So, try early braking, earlier turn in (it may feel strange in the first moment) and move the brake bias to the rear!

I think I was just not turning the wheel enough. Was trying to drive it like a GT car. Once I realized you have to turn the wheel more than a regular race car, I put my 'Nascar' wheel on my wheel base and it clicked. Had a lot of fun racing the Ai at Kyalami last night :)

    it's a truck, not a GoKart :)
yeap, they make a lot of fun, I love driving trucks. It's something complete different to other cars, you need another driving technic. You can't sit down into a truck and drive like a F1 or StockCar or what you have driven before. You will always need a couple of laps, spins, running of track and so on till you are familiar with it. But then, it's like an obsession...you can't stop

That's right, EuroTruckSimulator 2 and American Trucksimulator! Both are great, it's always a pleasure and beside AMS the only thing I do on PC (at home, not at work). For all of you who also love trucking I can advise ETS and ATS:):)
