I'm either going to upgrade my CPU or my GPU for AMS2 in VR (I only ever drive in VR).
My CPU is an i9 9900k and my GPU is a RTX 4070. I can either upgrade my CPU to a i7 13700k or upgrade my GPU to a RTX 4070 ti super. My goal is more frame rate, not upping the resolution, so which upgrade will give me more of an FPS boost in AMS2.
    Thanks.

I think you'll be in a better position to check which component is utilised more (thus more of a bottleneck) and will be worth upgrading more than the other.

Not to mention that the component performance is also affected by the performance of the rest of the setup (motherboard, RAM etc).

I'd suggest looking at Performance Monitor and run a game with it running in the background. This should give you a better idea which part is running overtime.

If both are at their limit then changing one part would be a waste of money as the upgrade power won't be unleashed.

Have a look at other parts too, there may be a long hanging fruit too.

You have to remember that VR is capped at whatever the HMD you haves refresh rate is.

    What HMD are you using?

The 4070 to a super ti seems meh, but the 9900k to 13700k single core speed is quite a step up.

Get what's holding you back now and consider the other component later in the upgrade path.

The 13700k will get faster DDR5 (if you go that path).

In the end you need to see of your getting 100% GPU atm, if so a new CPU will greatly improve 1% lows.

Sim depending I and GPU bottlenecked in some and CPU in others.

It never ends, haha enjoy the PCMR life.

I am running a 10900K (@stock) and a 4090 (@stock) and I am quite happy with AMS2 performance in my Quest3.With relatively high ingame quality settings and on 72 Hz my GPU runs at about 60-70% load in dry weather on most tracks.

Judging the CPU load is a little more difficult, as the game only runs on four cores (like most games) from what I know. So it doesn´t help much when a tool tells you that your CPU is on 24% only - no wonder when most other cores feel bored.and are only idling about.

An upgrade from a 4070 to a 4070 ti S doesn´t sound that great though. I wouldn´t expect too much of a push from that. As said before, finding the bottleneck first sounds like a reasonable idea. I´d suggest to use MSI Afterburner for that. When you work yourself into it a little, it can give you a huge number of graphs, observing GPU load, its voltage, power, temp, GPU-RAM usage and many more. Most impotantly though, you can watch each single core´s load too. If you want, you can strech the graphs out on a complete monitor, which might give you the chance of monitoring the past 30 mins or so.

Seems like a pointless expensive exercise going from a 4070 to 4070ti. I would update CPU now and then save some bucks for the when the RTX 50 series drops

I've just run MSI Afterurner. I upped the Steam VR supersampling to a silly 300% to strain the system.
    The FPS was at 15fps.
    The GPU was at 74%
The CPU core 1 was at 68%
The other cores were all between 25% - 45%.

I'm not sure what these numbers are telling me or if/where the bottleneck is, but shouldn't the GPU be running close to 100%?
Also I should mention I have 32GB of DDR4 system RAM.

Good question - I have the same issue with ETS2. None of the components even close to the limit but still poor experience (bit better though since update 1.50). Never got that sorted. Any kind of automatic quality reduction activated?

As for core 1, my sims usually run on the cores on "the other end", in my case on core 17-20 (10 cores + hyperthreading).

Don't bother with a GPU upgrade. I'm playing on an RTX 2080, and just recently upgraded to a Ryzen 5 7600 PC, which seemed to be the best overall bang for buck CPU at the time (and the first AMD processor I've had as a desktop since the 2000's).

The 4070 is a huge improvement over the 2080, and I run at fairly high details at 1440p, prioritising a >100fps framerate.

I don't use VR at the moment but when I play in it on my Quest 3, I've definitely found this combination was a huge step up from playing on my old i9-9900k, and RTX 2060

A 13th gen i7 to me would be the best value for money, however that socket is end of life, so you are unlikely to see possible CPU upgrades in the future without moving to a new motherboard as well. And if you're anything like me, you're probably sick of the amount of heat the i9 produces (and the absurd amount of noise the cooler makes for it).

I've decided to buy a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a Gigabyte 650M Auros Elite mobo and DDR5 6000 mhz cl30 ram. should do the job.

Yeah good choice man! I would have gone the 7800X3D as it came very highly recommended but for whatever reason decided I didn't need to spend the extra money.
