When I start a single race, for example, I see the car from a bird's eye view.
However, I would like to be seated in the cockpit by default at the start.
Where/how can I adjust this setting?
Note: Even if I switch to cockpit mode during a single race and restart the session, for example, due to a crash, I am returned to the bird's-eye view. This means that the game does not even save the last setting.

If I am correct the workaround is to watch a replay. Select Cockpit, let it drive for a while, quit the replay and you should be in the correct cameramode whenever you start a race.

I had something similar happen tonight. I always drive in cockpit mode. The first race I ran was in cockpit view. However the second one started in bumper cam. I pushed every button on both of my wheels and it never switched camera modes. I looked left and right, I turned the pit limiter on and off, I brought up different HUD's, I did things I've never done in this game in over two years but I never got the camera to switch. I'll try @Marius H suggestion tomorrow night to see if that works.

I don't understand why there isn't a command somewhere in the settings to fix the camera position.

I meant other than having to set a button for it. Because I have 2 rims if I set it for the Fanatec Formula V2.5 then it happens again when I have the Universal Hub connected, now I don't have that button anymore.

I was referring to a general camera setting feature somewhere in the options menus.

But the way it happened was very strange. Like I said earlier the first race I ran was fine. Just like normal. The 2nd race was a multi-class GT1 race so I think there were supposed to be 47 cars or something like that. But when the race started there were only 12 including the safety car and the camera was stuck in bumper mode. Quit that one and tried again this time there were 23 cars and the camera in bumper mode.

Do you make separate control sets for each wheel? I have a control set for each of my wheels and never have an issue when swapping out, just have to change to the control set for the wheel I have keybindings set for.

No I didn't know you could do that. So you have to go in and manually change to the setup that matches the wheel you are using?

You can make up to 5 different control sets. I make one for each wheel. When I make a new one I use the Copy from Another Preset to save time and then only bind buttons on the wheel, as button boxes don't change. This is the preset I have for my F1 Carbon wheel. Also have presets for my BMW wheel and for my WRC wheel. Additionally I have one for RallyX as the FFB needs to be adjusted differently.

Tonight I tried mapping the buttons but it didn't work. The only button that will map on the Universal Hub is for pause. I tried putting camera view on every other button and even though it shows on the settings page, it doesn't work in game. For the Formula rim I actually got the camera position to switch ONCE. The offset squares button switched it once during a practice session. Quit that session and tried it again and once again the camera stuck in bumper position.

@Marius H suggested to do a race, then go into the replay, select cockpit view, then exit the replay and the default camera will return to cockpit view. That didn't work either. The only three recognized camera views in the replay are chase, trackside, and bumper.

So right now the game is only running in bumper camera.

I believe there's a bug in your game. You could back up your AMS2 folder in my document. Delete the original, boot up AMS2 and see if it's fixed. You can also do a verify cache of AMS2. Right click AMS2 in Steam, installed files > verify cache.

When I ran the file validation it said 51 files failed to validate and will be reacquired. What does that mean?

That means you had 51 files that were not original, missing, or were corrupted. They now should be updated/replaced with good versions and your game validated.

Validating the files fixed the problem. Well it didn't return cockpit view as the default but at least the buttons were recognized and I could change the view.

Today I lost the cockpit camera again but now I know what's causing it. It's a problem with a certain modder's cars. If I try and use one of them, the camera sticks to the bumper and cannot be changed. I can go back to a regular AMS2 car and the camera is still on the bumper but now the buttons on the wheel work and the camera can be changed back to the cockpit.
