I tried to open the BT44 template in GIMP but got a fault in layer error. filesize is 66MB much larger then e.g. M23 template... Anyone else having this problem?

That is the only downside unfortunately, there could be multiple Ai using your livery, you installed.

But it is a start in the right direction.

Paint.net is free , and export to dds dxt1, you can open and modify another dds from another user. Or export the layer whit wireframe and open in paint.net and add another layer on top, (no 3d preview)

I use GIMP to edit dds files, but we need something to open the PSD files not supported by GIMP,
    I can't open the AMS2_Brabham_BT44_template.psd with Paint.net as-well
Probably this file is saved in another format than the other templates are saved in.
The Template PSD's feature more layers than the dds files do

here you have a transparent png layer, you can open with your editor, add your color or decal layer, save as .dds (hiding the wireframe layer)

    Thanks it gives good guidelines,
I will use quickbms to extract the dds files from the livery files
and use the uv mapping as extra layer

nope. Totally wrong assumption. Please don't spread wrong information.
That is how i did it in my first example and do it on all my packs.
But you can name all files whatever you want, as long as you enter that name correctly in the xml. Its just a filename and exactly that name you used you'll have to enter in the xml !!!!!

You can name it congobongo.dds if you like.., the game check for the xml and follow the path, the important part is the livery number at the beginning of item, this is the internal id for the skin. You can (i presume) put varius dds for distinct part of the skin. And please , we can have fun, no need to use "answering aggression" , we can correct wrong information in polite way
