Huge steering lag even when controller damping is set to 0

Love how the game looks in VR, and also the physics seem really great, but one thing is preventing me from purchasing the full bundle. The steering smoothing is adding a HUGE amount of delay to my inputs, most notably when trying out the karts, I found it takes around half a second for my steering wheel to reach the position of my gamepad stick, by which point I'm in the wall. No issues in LMU, EVO, AC1, or Dirt 2, they appear to be 1:1 with an unnoticeable amount of smoothing for millisecond spikes.

I've tried the advised settings of steering sensitivity set to 50, controller damping and speed sensitivity set to 0, but it's still a massive and unplayable delay.

Is there a solution, or do I have to beg the studio to make 0 controller damping actually be no smoothing? Couldn't find a config file to edit.

I've found the steering wheel takes even longer to re-centre. It just won't follow the stick position at all. It's a nightmare. Really disappointed.

Can you show us a screenshot of all of your controller settings?

This isn't the behaviour that most people are experiencing, my wheel is 100% one to one with the game, so that probably means there is a solution for you somewhere, keep at it :)

    here's a video demonstrating.

It feels extremely laggy even with small movements of the stick, but it's easier to see with large movements as demonstrated in the video.

It's completely unusable with controller, because it doesn't match user input 1:1. After the stick has stopped moving, the wheel takes around half a second to catch up. The problem becomes worse as the stick get's closer to centre on the Y axis (vertical). Setting the game to wheel as the controller type doesn't help at all.

Ah right, so just to be clear you are using a controller in VR, and the wheel in the game is not responding how you expect? I don't think I read your OP properly sorry.
There is quite an extensive thread on the forum discussing gamepad support, and I also had some success tweaking the Steam controller settings for my Steam Deck, mainly reducing deadzones.
These are the settings I use on Steam Deck if it's any help

thanks. I did try similar regarding the controller damping, but that just introduced a different type of lag. I think the issue is a smoothing parameter that isn't exposed to the UI, disallowing the user to turn it down or off. Apparently there used to be a config file where it could be fixed, but I don't think it's available anymore.

I was sat in VR last night at Brands Hatch at dusk, and I thought to myself, this is the closest I've come to reality in a sim racing game in terms of visuals. So I'm really gutted it's undrivable for controller users :(

For VR I'd really recommend a wheel if it's an option, it intensifies the experience tenfold. Do you feel the car doesn't respond properly or is it just a problem with the steering animation? Does it drive ok in 2D without the wheel visible with a bonnet view?

The car's response lags in unison with the steering wheel animation, and it affects 2d and VR. The smoothing is so intense that it actually masked the huge spikes in my faulty ps4 controller that I used previously. The values of the ps4 controller were abruptly jumping all over the place, but in AMS2 the steering was perfectly smooth, whereas in LMU the wheel was jumping all over the place in unison with the actual input values.
