Make cars not bottom out in banked curves

    Hello guys!

While racing on banked curves (take Daytona or Monza 10k or a comparable track), I can observe the cars bottoming out. This can be distinguished by a grinding sound and the car losing speed.

This seems obvious and logical. The car body is pressed down to the track surface due to the banked geometry of the curve, the vertical amount of centrifugal force pushes the car even more down additionally to pressure generated by aerodynamics of the car. This leads to touching the ground with the body-work, resulting in scratiching the ground, which converts kinetic energy to heat => loss of energy = loss of speed.

Now what to do against this - in the real world? Raising the car! If the body-work is higher, the distance to the track is enlarged plus the amount of spring deflection is higher until the car touches the ground. In addition, stiffening all springs leads to more force needed to push the car down.

Result for setups in a racing game: raise the body-work and stiffen the springs for not scratching the ground in banked curves. This works with some cars. No more scratching to hear, no more significant speed loss. But with other cars, this won't work. No matter how high you set the car body (within the technical boundaries of the respective setup), no matter how hard you set all of the springs - the scratching will go on. I observed this for example in Monza 10k with a LMDh car.

What setup changes lead to a car not to bottom out in banked curves?

Thanks for your guesses on this topic,
    herakles

Good question. LMDH for example is ofcourse not made for the roughness of 10k Monza. It were different times back then. LMDH is made for smooth (road) surfaces like Le Mans. I would mostly advice using older F-Retro's and F1's and such on Monza 10K as they are totally made for that. If I am also correct the banking in Monza 10k are a bit buggy because I saw a couple of cars clipping while bouncing. I've reported that before Christmas so lets see how it goes. For now I suggest older tech that were made for the roughness of older days.

Thanks for your valuable reply, which seems obvious. I tried running at the bottom of the curve in Monza by using the least possible banking, and I am slightly faster - so this fits your suggestion.

BUT: if I do the same at Daytona (a "new" track, which is in real life still in use by modern cars) with a Formula USA Gen 3 Model Lola B2K00 Toyota and I set maximum height of the car and all six springs to the hardest setting, the cars still touches the ground in the curves.

Maybe your hint is only a part of the truth?

    Eager to know more,

That's strange, yes. You could reset the setup or verify the cache. If my mind recalls you need uneven setup for ovals otherwise you still will be touching the road when on a banked curve.

I am sorry, I have to refute my writings before. I wrongly adjusted only the srpings on the left side while testing the Indycar. If I stiffen the springs on the right side, everything works as expected.

    Sorry for the confusion!
