It would be nice to be able to have the game pause if I need to change my pit strategy. I realize that this is probably controversial, but in the real world, the driver isn't tasked with scrolling through a menu while trying to keep the car on the track. In GTR2, you would pull into the pit stall, and the game would pause, allowing you to change anything you wanted to change, fuel, tires, repairs, even swap drivers. What was really great was I could let the AI driver race, go take care of other household business, then come back and he would be pitted, with the game paused, waiting for me to do something. I know that there are strategies that I can select, but sometimes the race changes things. Maybe if there was a pit strategy option in the pause menu, it would allow me to not stress about keeping the car on the road while arrowing up and down through a menu.
