What if it was linked to some sort of cloud processing? That would be cool to see implemented. Imagine if Microsoft wanted to do the same thing with Forza and hooked in Azure somehow.

What would be even cooler would be an open source version that could be licensed by other devs. Given enough time something like this will end up in AC lol.

It is very, very different from drivatars. This whole Sophy AI is of a completely different scope, it's really on another level.

It has been stated to be as hard to run as the current AI. The ressource hungry part is training it, not running it.

Live For Speed has had AI that learns and optimizes itself for more than 15 years.

I'm absolutely blown away by what they've achieved. It's staggering...and very scary!

I can see that learning is the heavy part, but learning has to happen while running at the beginning. Unless it's done before distributing the game. But if this is the case, what happens when something is changed in the game physics? Where is the AI learning the new limits? What happens when a new content or a new track is dropped?
I'm not totally convinced that all this comes with no burden for the hardware of the user. Hope I am proved wrong...

Since it's a console title, Sony has to be conservative with the hardware usage anyway. No way to upgrade.

What Sony has achieved seems cool but is a bit of a black box: when that trained AI runs on the Playstation, how much physics aware is it about the physics of its car, the physics of the track, the weather (supposedly not handled here but you get the point) ? Does it only take other car positions and track geometry as input and pre-computed car characteristics for the car it drives to determine how much it can realistically accelerate/brake etc but in a dumb way (that is not actually using the tech spec of the car to do some realtime calculation but hardcoded pre-computed values obtained during the learning phase) ? In other terms, does it run a physics model (probably not) ?
Also, what guarantee we have this superhuman AI tuned to be super competitive is not "cheating", maybe doing something that the game physics allow but that no human is good enough to replicate ?

I think this more intelligent AI compared to the pretty lousy pre-scripted AI all sims use until now - is pretty exciting to follow.
And I guess it can evolve the same way as the AI in chess computers where the situation is now that even the worlds best human chess players can only win against the best chess computers in about 1 out of 10 sessions.

ByTheWay: The other neural network based AI ANNA in MotoGP has been out some more years than this Sophy thing. But without really giving MotoGP more realistic drivers according to reviews.

This is exactly what smells trouble: without doubt it will not be possible to train the AI on the console. So it's one of the following:
1- AI is trained in the Sony servers before being deployed. This also means that at every physics or content change they need to be retrained and re-downloaded
2- AI is not trained after the first sim drop which means that as content and physics change it will be very soon garbage
3- Training has to happen on the user hardware which bodes for a much heavier workload than even a sim like ACC brings....

If I had to bet it will be 2 initially then when the crowd will roar at how garbage AIs will be Sony will try and update the worst of them.

Hehe this sounds exactly how the "crowd is roaring" about the AI in a sim near us

A sim that starts with "r" and ends with "2"?

Their system, utilizing mass-scale analysis of customer-driven laps, is most interesting to me. It is also bespoke for every track and car/series. Massively long time to get it all done and packaged in the game (hence the staggered release of it), but potentially the best result in the end.

    Hahahaha.
Good one - I cant stop laughing :p
No no my good man - it was not that one.
And neither the other one starting with an R and including 2x vowels in the middle.

A slightly leading help could be: in a sim VERY near us :D

OK. Thank you for this info.:)
I have often asked myself how is iRacing creating their AI - because I have also heard a lot of good things about it.
