Look, here is an exemple. 5760x1080 all at ultra with ultra super sampling. The shadow on the dash is quite gross and directly in your face.

 

If bethesda games are any indicative shadows are a major hit on performance, that must be why they are like that in AMS2, but in Ultra they should look better for sure. I never actually noticed, maybe because I mainly race in tin tops and maybe the shadows arent so proeminent in this case.

 

I don't think you can influence the shadow quality at all in AMS2, whether ultra, medium or low.

 

Shadow quality is

Number one performance eater in

ALL

3d games.

And i mean all.

 

I join the chorus of warning towards shadows eating up performance. Also, do you really need it when going at 200 mph?

 

What is the intuition behind why it's so bad for performance? I guess it means you essentially have to do some kind of occlusion check (render?) for all light sources - do you have some insider knowledge?

 

Do you need a skybox when going 300 kmh, or trees, grass, a crowd around the track, textures on objects, why not have just squares and various shapes on wheels driving around because you do not notice stuff ?


Well i DO need all of it and i do notice all of the details even at 300 kmh. If it can look even better given more modern hardware compared when the game came out, why not make the game look better ? You can always keep your reduced graphical settings if you do not notice stuff or do not care.


EDIT: All the miniscule details matter because if you start removing stuff with the argument "you do not notice it" then you will end up with just another Ubisoft game where the sequel is uglier than the game that came before it.

No insider knowledge. Just 20 years of following behind the scenes of game dev. Why do you think ray tracing looks so good? It's an expensive way of rendering light.

and what's the end result when we want to correctly render light? More lifelike (read: expensive) shadows.

Ray tracing = incredibly good looking shadows

Edit: yes i know most ray tracing showcase videos show shiny reflections but that's absolutely not the true purpose of the method. Ray tracing exists so that light bounces off of objects much more realistically. Better reflections are just a by product o that.
