Default brake pressure on the karts are awful with my G29 pedals, possibly not a biggie for your "Heusinkveld" :D

So yea, it is not a leveled field since we all have different hardware.

Who could still be beaten by a guy with a G25 taped to a desk

Two of the fastest drivers I know still use a G29 and a potentiometer based brake pedal. Honestly it's surprising how humble the rigs are of some of the best aliens.

I think famous Huttu did use a pretty lousy wheel for many years.

Do not underestimate old wheels... I use to beat a lot of DD lads with an old Driving Force GT and I'm not even one of the fastest drivers around.

Because "it's not about the steel, but the hand that wields the sword".

PS: I use a card box to hold my pedals in place.

Before the guy with his Logitech MOMO comes and smokes you on the Nordschleife for breakfast... (true story)

I just started Simracing with a g923 and on the 5th day or so of driving the nordschleife in a 911gt3 I could beat the 7minutes easy (no assists)

Correct, too many of the lobbies have forced default setups.
A filter on the Lobby list to filter them out could help.
(It strikes me that, for a simulator, many arcade-like settings are used in the lobbies)
Fortunately, we still have the Time-Trial

As a user of a DFGT, I'm now confused as to whether I have the worst or the best wheel around.

I dont know, but saying that a top 1% motorsport guy is being praised by his team for having a good understanding of his cars setup, kinda insinuates that a lot of other drivers dont... So youre proving my point here.
There is a huge difference in knowing how a car is performing on track and knowing how to actually fix it.
Remember the Race Engineer in Project Cars 2? It did exactly that. You tell it the car has understeer on corner entry and the Race Engineer would adjust the Front ARB accordingly.
I used to race downhill mountainbikes competatively all around the world, and I could tell what my suspension was doing right or wrong pretty accurately, but tuning the bikes fork and rear shock was pretty much always left up to an actual mechanic/engineer.
But yes, the absolute top tier of racing car drivers in the world getting paid millions probably know a thing or two about how their cars work, who would have thought huh?

And I think youd be surprised how many simracers are buying setups. Ask Dave Perel.
Writing off everybody who doesnt want to, or have the time to dive into making custom setups as a "lower ranked driver" is absolutely laughable. Faster laptimes come from hours spent in the drivers seat, tinkering with setups becomes relevant (for the most part) when youre already a fast driver and affects the last couple of tenths of laptime to be gained.
Also remember that the vast majority of simracers are not in the higher ranks. Thats why theyre called higher ranks.

I already said I understand the appeal of nerding out over setups but it just doesnt interest me enough at this point in time.

And just to be clear, I didnt say custom setups should be BANNED FROM ALL SIMRACING!!!11!!, I simply said I see the appeal of fixed setup races.
And when I look at the amount of fixed setup races on youtube, or simply in some of the leagues Ive raced in, Id say Im not the only one and Id even argue it works as a BOP of sorts.

Now excuse me while I hop onto a lower ranked driver LFM race, in a plebian GT3 car using TC and ABS, with a setup that I paid actual money for. :p

If you just read what I say instead of just trying to twist my words then it was obvious in the article that the team positively admired that Magnussen had much more knowledge about car setup than the average driver.
But it was also obvious that a driver with the opposite approach like I only want to drive the car would be useless for the team because his lacking or unqualified feedback.
So much of my proving your point.
