Question, will a 1080Ti be able to drive a HP reverb 2? Not at its max capacity of course but with some tricks?
I really want to go back to VR racing. I do have the PS5 so I can and will buy the PSVR2 in a few months. But I also want to race with AMS2 in VR. If my system can drive the Reverb, with lesser GFX, then I’m considering the purchase as well.
Does Anybody here have experience with this? With a more or less system like mine?

Last year, I tried a HP Reverb G2 with my RTX 2070 in AMS2. It was not able to run at a stable 90FPS at native resolution with minimal graphics settings. This was before I had started exploring OpenXR, though, so maybe that might have worked better.

I had to upgrade from a 3080 because the FPS wasn't great even at low settings. I had a similar issue back with the CV1 with a 1080Ti and got out of VR because of it.
I got this G2 for cheap so just had to grab it, but it cost me heaps as i had to upgrade to the 4090, haha.
I know you didn't even want 1080p triples because you want fidelity so I'm not sure you would be happy with the G2 at less than native resolution. Settings in AMS2 don't give a huge boost but lowering resolution using OpenXR does, but also is a massive downgrade on visuals.

Also the G2 has a 60Hz mode but it has bad screen flickering, like PWM at a low frequency. Massive headache material.

Yeah, that is what I’m afraid of. I can live with lower GFX in VR but it must be a smooth experience. If this will be a problem then I have to take it for what it is and safe money to update my PC or don’t buy a vr set for use on my PC. :D

I honestly don't think you will get a smooth gameplay out of the 1080ti no matter what you do, unless maybe it's at a very low resolution. But the G2 at less than native isn't great, but at native it's very impressive.

Yeah, same for me. Had an RTX 3080 before and didn't get constant 90 FPS during daytime racing (even with OpenXR and foveated rendering) so I went for the upgrade to a 4090.
Now I can run full resolution with high settings (even at night with rain).
Still using OpenXR and foveated rendering though.

    @Bull Shark
You should also take your CPU into consideration. Don't know how CPU-heavy AMS 2 is, but with iRacing i ran into a CPU bottleneck after upgrading to the 4090. So I also had to upgrade that to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D

yeah and that is the problem with PC's LoL. If you update one component, The most of the components will need an upgrade as well. I have an i8700k which is a bit on the low side nowadays.

And what about a RTX 4070? They are reasonable priced atm.
MSI GeForce RTX 4070 12GB VENTUS 3X For example.

Not an upgrade over the 3080. Depends on what your willing to compromise.

Indeed. Then I really have to start saving money as you had an 3080 and had problems with good settings and performance.

The 3080 was serviceable, it could do 90Hz but I needed to run lower resolution than I was happy with. AMS2 settings dont change performance much other than shadows and MSAA, so lowering resolution was the only real solution, then its blurry especially as i tested running higher resolution and saw what the Reverb was capable of looking like.

So I guess it all depends on what your happy to look at, I remember 1080p triples didn't make you happy after playing on 1440p triples, so I think you would want to upgrade soon to get the Reverb to get its max potential.
I run 3400x3370 resolution in OpenXR on the 4090 in AMS2 now instead of 2400x2370 with the 3080. Even though the Reverb is a 2160x2160 per eye HMD 3170x3130 is what is needed to account for the barrel distortion, so that 3170x3130 resolution is basically native.

Those second resolution numbers (eg, 3370) are appropriate as I'm afk atm, but it's something like that, it is always that bit lower that the first numbers (eg, 3400)

    Hope this helps.

Consistency is so much more important then the frame rate number. A constant 36 FPS is much smoother than jumping from 110-120.

I think when people lament the "frame rate", they are really lamenting that they are at a poor spot - they probably get say, 60 fps in qualifying but then it jumps between 30 and 60 with the other cars on the screen, and they think it's because it's "only 60".

For the record I have a 7800x3d, 6k/30CL ram, and a rtx 4080 suprim. I have the oculus slider maxed out and while I can get 90/120 in AMS2 with reasonable visuals, I lowered it to 72 HZ today to make ACC consistent.

I find it weird that AMS2 and ACC with no DLSS running, neither gets 100% usage out of the 4080. Actually it sits at like 70-80% usage. If a 7800x3d in a sim can't max it out, then IDK, Makes no sense. And the CPU seems to sit at like 30% as well, so frankly I don't know what's limiting them at this point

Yeah, as said, best thing is wait and save some money. Otherwise I’ll regret it. I can wait, no problem. Having a great time with AMS2 atm, even on a single screen and in pancake mode. And I do not have that much time for gaming. Thanks for your inside info. :D

I have to disagree here! If i get 80 constant fps it feels awful, i need and i mean need 90fps or its stutter fest. 36fps, id be quitting PC gaming until i could get 90.
For reference, my frame time is 11.1ms flat. Only spikes when loading or in menus. Specs in sig.

2nd that. At least 90 fps. Otherwise it is a no go in vr. At least for me it is.
