Not getting alerts when new posts appear in watched threads

I notice this happening lately. Namely i don't get alerts all the time when there are new posts in
the threads that i watch. Why is that ? Do the alerts get sent immediately after a new post is published or
every once in a while ?

Happens on every forum I visit. I've been wondering what's the logic behind alerts. Sometimes new thread stops giving alerts and some really old thread gives one and then stops again.
