True, I have no idea how they work, but does anyone? Machine learning is indeed a far better term when applied to my perspective.

I'm not expecting a Sophie style AI. As you rightly point out the existing computer drivers using 'old school logic' are pretty good. However they, I believe, could potentially be optimised by leveraging the power of machine learning to "fill the gaps" in it's flaws at certain sections of the many tracks, in the many cars that AMS2 offers. The braking, acceleration, steering, speed, track conditions ect are datasets and, the ghost replays from humans are also datasets. This is what AI is good at, analysis of large datasets and pattern finding. This is my point, how this is done I can't answer, maybe you can! Current AI is already coding fast and efficiently, all I (and others) are saying is a more open minded attitude to the possibilities of leveraging machine learning to optimise the computer drivers code and pathing could result in a better experience. :)

Sorry for being a grumpy and somewhat intransigent old sod, all I'd like (and others no doubt) is a more balanced experience against the computer drivers in single player...

NO need to apologise - I hope I was careful and sensitive in my response. I personally work in machine learning and I would certainly relish an opportunity to look at utilising the information you describe. But, this is not available to me (unless i hack the game and painstakingly download a bunch of ghosts). I would love to hear whether it is considered viable or interesting by the team, but don't hold my breath as they have more interesting things to do than entertain my(our?) curiosities.

Utilizing a vast array of driving lines generated by users is the approach iRacing is utilizing. Check out how long it is taking them to painstakingly tweak every series and track layout prior to individual release. It also cannot be the sum total of the approach--the AI still need behavioural programming to make decisions in the moment, so the machine learning portion of the exercise is really only replacing the racing lines and corridors part of the "AI package."

Project Motor Racing seems to be taking a ground-up approach using AI...news came out a few days ago about it.

I am aware of the iRacing approach, and it is a highly regarded single player experience from what I hear. I never have rented the game, bad internet rules me out of an online experience - I live in the middle of nowhere for good reason, people! :p Their approach is one that I believe Reiza should look at and learn from. If iRacing weren't so expensive I'd be tempted to try the single player experience...

PMR looks interesting, I sit firmly on the fence, been bitten by Mr Bell and his hyperbole before.

We are blessed with quite a few racing simulations but AMS2 is by far my favourite. I just hope the jank can be ironed out, not that Reiza are doing a bad job, there is an impressive amount of progress already made, but still a way to go with the computer drivers and niggly bugs... :(
