I don't think they will limit the mods to their mod "marketplace". MSFS has both marketplace and AC-like mods.

How I love AMS2. Today I found a car I'd not even seen before (Old Stock Race). it has tracks I've never driven. For some tracks there are more than 5 variations. And people are raving about the potential of presumably yet another n-point brush tire model...? I am sure it will be nice but like, why hype?

There will no longer be a bunch of thieves making mods, so that pretty much means it will only be studio's that have the resources to develop their own mods from scratch, like RSS and VRC.

Edit: Curated / licensing agreements are words to notice.

"Marco Massarutto went on to explain that they want to create a system of curated mods, as they must take the licensing agreements with the brands seriously. However, they are also considering a system that would allow mod creators to participate financially, but free mods should also be possible."

Yeah but then again in GT you always had to unlock cars, progresion in those games was about unlocks and the number of cars was always a plus. AFAIK Kunos has said that they want to create a hybrid between unlocking cars and having everything unlocked at the beggining, so you'll be able to drive a hypercar in the first minute by renting it but you won't be able to customize it? It's a bit confusing. We'll see how it turns out but I wish at some point we get a GT/Forza career mode in a simracing tittle on PC.

I guess if they want to limit the mod creation to avoid what happened with AC they'll have to give limited access to mod tools to only a small selected group, otherwise it's only a matter of time untill people will start to distribute mods in discord servers and random websites.. but if they limit mod tools then it doesn't feel like modding anymore, it's kinda outsourcing content to other studios

Exactly I can see an Official mod system in game with curated mods and then there will be a way to have personal mods which will be anything and everything.

If they are giving people access to mod the game they wont be able to stop people from doing it off of their official curated system

It could work like Forza Motorsport 4 where you can borrow any car you want for certain modes (free play & online).

Bringing the discussion back to AMS2, I can see it either using the GT format or the Project CARS format where you basically progress from karts to LMPs by hopping from team to team (no money system). Or maybe the devs will bring something out of left-field? What would that even look like?

If I have to bet on anything (don't quote me, no beta tester has info on what the career mode will look like!) I would bet on being more similar to pCars2, maybe taking some inspiration from the career mode companion app that has been developed for this sim. My only question is how they'll integrate dlc tracks into all of this, but thats for them to decide.

Yeah, something like Project CARS is probably the most likely path, but I'm still curious to see what new innovations they could come up with. For the DLCs, I like to think they would simply allow players who don't have the track DLCs to access them anyway but only in career mode, which they already are doing for preset championships. That would be quite nice...

Oh they are? Didn't know that. Ok so yes that would probably be the best solution then.
Regarding inovation my wish would be a career mode like pcars2, starting from low classes and moving up the ladder but instead of going from lower to faster, it would be going from classic to modern, starting an F1 career to start in vintage cars on vintage tracks and moving to modern F1, same with the GTs. I think that would be cool

Asm2 begin to have good mods recently. What I dislike about tracks mod is alway the AI implementation that are mostly bad for all sim games.

I believe so, back when I only owned the base game I was able to start the GT1 championship despite not owning the Nurburgring DLC.

A career mode that progresses by era would be a pretty unique idea. It would need the car roster to have full representation of a particular category, for every era, which AMS2 can pull off for F1 and Stock Car Brasil, but other categories will need more fleshing out.

    An example for endurance prototypes, I can see it going from Group 6/Can-Am -> Group C -> GT1 -> 2000s LMP900 -> 2010s LMP1-H -> LMDh. There are still a few missing links there.

The reason we don’t have all of the car we dream on any sim, is because of license. How will brands agree to have their brand on ac evo for free and other brand will have an official lice se with kunos ?

I don't think any brand would agree to have their brand in it for free, but there are pieces of content that don't require license, Generic Formula cars for example. Free mods would be either unlicensed cars or fictional tracks/cars.

Disclaimer: This is all just my opinion, no facts of any kind. YMMV

My understanding is that there will no longer be content ripped from other sims. You won't have thief #1 stealing from thief #2 and making a couple changes and calling it their own, like so many of the AC mods. There are plenty of free mods in AC that are not stolen property. You can buy models, you don't need to create them. But in AC, you have people like "Easy" that take someones hard work, make a simple change to it and then he calls it his mod, going as far as removing credits from others, refusing to remove it from his site. The state of modding in AC is disgusting. Download a mod, put a new paint scheme on it and fix a visual bug or two, maybe slap another cars physics on it and then they put if for sale on their Patreon as if it's their creation, which it isn't. There are no longer moral values in AC modding, you can thank Patreon for that.

Another example is with tracks. I won't name names, but LFM pissed off a bunch of long time modders when they started using their scratch built tracks without even asking for permission to do so. A couple of them removed their tracks from download sites because of it and no longer do mods for AC. That's just not going to happen in AC Evo, unless Kunos simply cannot stop it, which may be the case. Anyways, modding in AC Evo is a long way off. It won't happen until Kunos has what they call a complete product, which could be a few years.

Agree on the modding thing although I don't think it's going to take years, if we're going for Kunos previous Early acces works I expect the process to take around 5 months or so, and they said Mod support is planned after the early acces period, but I'm still confused as to what they plan to do to control the modding scene.

For those who haven't kept up with the latest AC Evo news, you can make what you will from this quote from an Overtake interview.

Will Assetto Corsa EVO officially support mods?

We want to support mods like we did in the first Assetto Corsa. The modding will be available after we complete the Early Access program and not before, so they will have to be patient! What we want to do is create a platform where the most talented modders can share their content whilst cooperating directly with the car manufacturers.

To be clear, we do not want to support the grabbing of content from other games because this is unfair. But we want to give the right visibility to those modders that are very talented. We want to provide the very best selection of mods so that our audience can enjoy them. This will include both tracks and cars.
