I have a 4080 and still prefer H.264+ for the higher bitrate (I run it at 350, didn't see much improvement beyond that). They say in the VD beta that AV1 has been improved, but that H.264+ has been made worse, so we'll see what the next release brings us.

Edit: I see the VD beta was just released today.

At the time I had the Oculus Rift CV1, it was a lot easier to use VR I believe. I’m waiting on my Quest 3 to arrive but when I read all the posts here… I don’t know if it makes my happy or sad.. :D

Depending on your hardware it can be a headache and i was honestly sad how bad my experience was for quite a while compared to the simple plug & play of my Rift S that died on me half a year ago.

Now that i am playing through Wifi6 and got an aftermarket headstrap with a few other things for extra comfort, i am happy with the Quest 3.

I'm still using an old Oculus CV1 headset. I barely used it for years, but now I'd like to start using it a bit more.
Is there any general suggestion I can follow to get some more additional image quality out of it? I have an AMD 6900 XT, if that matters.

Ordered a new pc with a Ryzen 7 7800x3D and a Nvidia RTX 4080 Super. I hope it will be ok when running the Quest 3 via a link cable.
Planning to order a 3rd party headstrap as well.

Check Destek QH3. It doesn't have a battery as you'd use with the cable, it's cheap and it's comfortable due to lack of battery.

What are the main settings that affect rain?
As is known the performance plummets, 90fps and smooth and the first sign of drizzle and it's down to 60fps. I have a graphics preset for "night/rain" racing but even then I think I'm running too high on some settings (see below)

    any help appreciated, thanks

Max amount of cars visible. Since the fps drop is mostly due to headlights shining in your car/mirror.

Or just drive cars without headlights...

Already have visible cars on lowest settings and not much difference with cars with no headlights, drops into the 70s which is marginally better but still becomes too stuttery to race properly with.

ultimately it's the headlights that are the bigger issue, but from the settings that you posted the only thing I can see making a noticeable difference would be to set EnhancedMirrors to 0, beyond that I would just either drop you render resolution down a notch or two or use the G2's 60hz mode and keep your settings as they are.

yeah I think the Res is the (unfortunate) way to go, it's already dropped a lot with OpenXR Toolkit but I may have to lower it some more. Using 60hz is a no go personally, it's simply nowhere near as fluid as 90.

    thanks guys, will persevere :)

Try FSR setting in OpenXR Toolkit. That gave me some headroom set on 72% render and 90% sharpening

Each day I change a setting in VR. Now my new "best settings" is change everything I can to run daylight at 120Hz and rain with headlights at 60fps ASW uwith shadows ULTRA, because is nice. And camera moviment with lateral g forces at 100%, legacy head moviment on and 0% of head moviment, because this settings are horrible in flat screen, but a blast in VR to feel G forces and catch slides.

I've always just plug and played with my old rift 2 but I've recently updated to a quest 3 and a rtx 4090 and while I was blown away with how smooth it was throuh the oculus app, I thought I'd look at using virtual desktop... Such a difference! So much better, looks much clearer in the distance.

I also looked at going back to link cable with openXR + the toolkit companion app and open composite, so I can change saturation etc as I'd love to be ale to have a play with that stuff... And while I have it working it seems (sort of), the quality is still better wirelessly through virtual desktop which I find strange..

My problem though is I cant open the openxr toolkit companion app in game... I can't seem to get the on-screen vr menus to appear using the hotkeys. has anyone else had this problem?

Spend a good while searching through this thread (and google) to see if anyone had something similar and found a solution. nothing worked so far.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Probably obvious not sure what to try next

Most likely your still launching in Oculus mode and not OpenXR at all. You need this hack to trick AMS2 GitHub - rodolZ80/bypass-oculus-detector: Windows Library that simulates not having the Oculus service running and having the VR Headset disconnected.

Are you using the system wide opencomposite or the single DLL file method?

Single DLL file worked on my Q2 and also pico Neo3 link and still is

especially since using the oculus runtime bypass method

what method are you actually using?
