You do not need to trade fov. FFR toys with resolution (unless you set the ring to cull, of course).

I will always trade FoV over resolution. I reduced vertical to 50% and the performance gain is huge and i do not mind the black bars because it gives vibes of wearing a helmet anyway so just free performance.

You can also use the black borders as a passthrough with VD. This happens automatically when you activate the passthrough. This allows you to see your own steering wheel. This saves performance and also gives you the Mixed Reality bonus.

I tried it, but only got 2% headroom, and the flickered noticeably. No matter what setting I tried, the performance gain was unfortunately minimal.

Interesting to learn that TAA doesn't seem to help either.

I use Msaa 2x (sometimes x4) with cropped FOV (12% & 50% in Mixed Reality mode) and supersampling at approximately 2800x1800 per eye... With VD, I also use the new sharpening function before decoding. And with the glasses, I sharpen it afterward: 100% and 25%. VD is powered by an Ethernet to USB adapter and delivers 500 Mbit with a total latency of under 35 ms. 2-pass and quantization are also enabled. I also use OpenCompsite and OpenXR as interfaces.

The engine doesn't like too much AA (sharpening works better). The image becomes noticeably softer, the distance blurrier, and performance starts to stumble. AA costs less than SS or very high native resolutions. So, yes. The AA options should help if performance is insufficient.

When I reduce the top or bottom of FOV the image squashes or extends - it doesnt give me the black bars like in the other titles. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a Pimax headset? I've had a similar problem with Pimax and SteamVR fov crop.

The last time I checked, SteamVR itself doesn't support it the same way and will squash like that.

Virtual Desktop does support and Meta's toolkit for Quest headsets as well and also the OpenXRToolkit (in the form of foveated rendering, which is not exactly the same, but you can reach similar performance gains with right kind of configuration).

And if you set left and right also on 70%, how does that look?

Can you explain how this is done? there is an option to set this passthrough in VD? I use VD in passthrough (before i start VR there is my room visible around the big screen) but i don't think i get the effect you mention. Did you mean something else? I have the vertical FOV to 80%, maybe is too small to notice?

Yes, I use Q3 with Link. I bought PCL in the past, but there was no way to crop to fov back then. Thus, I returned it and kept using Q3.

I imagine that will make it all normal again, but i dont want to sacrifice any horizontal fov.

Maybe you're only using the passthrough home environment with VD? There's another passthrough setting under the Streaming tab. There, you need to click on Environment and set the color in the configuration. Have you tried this yet?

Well, ofcourse it depends on the headset, but on my quest 2 i could lower it a bit before even noticing a reduced fov, but did gain performance significantly
