I like 30 minutes or 1 hour races, but not if 2/3 of the field leaves. Then it just becomes boring hotlappin because there's no one to race with. Racing is like solving puzzles.

Long P and long Q with 5 or 6 laps races just make me cry. It's also bad for the people. They train themselves for instant satisfaction, etc. They need to train their brains for long races with battles, strategy and all that.

It's kinda similar with coitus or bating. If you come within 1 minute your wife will not be happy. If you can last for a couple of minutes and have some great coitus.. Your wife will be happy. So you've to train your brain to like 20 - 30 minute races and even more.

And also same thing with driving to your vacantion-desitination. In the Netherlands you can drive within 10 minute or 20 to another (big) city. In Ireland I've to drive 2 or 3 hours or so from Cork to Kilarney. After a while my brain adapts to the driving-distance of Ireland.

My server settings are 15-20 min Q, 10 min race, default setups, no assists and no damage. I very rarely have any trouble getting a full server (12-16 people).

The Q length is important to allow people time to join, shorter and people miss the deadline (I agree with Toni, it would be nice to be able to switch it off).

Damage and mechanical failures off because crash-free casual races are almost mythical and racing experiences are rarely improved by, well, not racing.

Setups default because the idea is that it be a casual race that anyone can join and win by driving well without having to spend days offline making setups for each car/track combo.

Having people stay after they crash or spin in the race is another matter, but usually there are a few guys who will stay for the next race(s) and you end up with a lobby of nice people, many who I have raced with again and again.

I have had some terrible races online and some fantastic ones, but when I am playing online I am not investing myself in the race like I would in a league; s*** happens, sometimes by accident, sometimes intentionally by crashers, sometimes as a result of bad pings, bugs and game issues.

My advice to anyone is if you are happy just racing with some folks and enjoying driving, public lobbies are great, it's about having fun, but you should understand that something is likely to not go to plan.

If you want the full weekend experience then there are many great sim. racing clubs out there who run leagues and mini leagues.

The beauty of it is that anyone can host a server with whatever settings they like, but the above seems to work fine for me.

P.S. I'm in the UK and setting a Brazilian circuit with F1 or GT cars never fails to fill a server late at night XD.
