    Greetings everyone!

We are on the verge of a new update for Automobilista 2, packing many substantial gameplay & simulation improvements as well as a free new car.

Let´s go over the highlights then to give you an idea of what to expect as AMS2 hits V1.6.9.95!

    Panoz Esperante GTR-1
    021 (4).jpg
The upcoming V1.6.6.95 will include a free new car – the imposing Panoz Esperante GTR-1 arrives as a fresh new contender in the GT1 class, the fastest ever GT class now featuring five models in total.

    018 (3).jpg
The GTR-1 was developed by Panoz in partnership with Reynard Motorsport, with a distinct long-hood layout earning it "the Batmobile" nickname amongst the fans with whom it became an instant cult-classic; powered by a thunderous 600 HP Ford V8 placed just behind the front axle, the car traded designs conventions of the era for retaining a more distinct American character, managing to remain competitive against the top cars of the class competing in both sides of the Atlantic from 1997 to 1999.

    More (Big!) AI Developments
    035 (2).jpg
Keeping the tradition from recent updates, V1.6.9.95 will bring another fresh batch of AI improvements – more substantive this time with three major developments that should carry fruits all the way to V1.7 later in the year.

The first big development is an overhaul of how the AI “sees” the race track edges, improving its ability to detect the useable lanes at any given time and where to best place itself in it both in terms of optimizing performance as well as avoiding hazards; In practice this should result in far less frequent off track excursions curb and wall clipping by AI cars; smoother & more purposeful movement both while adhering to the racing line as well as when negotiating traffic, and improved race craft both against the player as well as against each other.

The second big development breaks down how AI race lines are defined; instead of the single dry and wet fast lines which all AI cars would tend to gravitate around at any given point, AI drivers will now be able to follow distinct lines from each other, with these distinct alternative lines now possibly being self-generated based off a set of existing recorded lines; this is also the case for the wet lines introduced in the previous update, which up until then were only working for the handful of tracks that did get these manually crafted wet lines.

This development greatly expands the scope of what we can do with the AI in AMS2, but the best results from this feature are still to come when it reaches maturity in V1.7, but even at this early stage users should already be able to witness cases of the AI being a little more diverse and creative, especially when conditions switch from dry to wet or from wet to dry.

Finally, new AI customization options in the form of AI Traction Skill & AI Brake Skill Scalars, which much like the existing AI Wet Skill Scalar and their own names suggest serve to scale AI performance specifically in traction and braking zones; users can adjust those settings in order to trim the AI performance to their preference and / or to better suit their own driving style (with late brakers for ex likely finding value in running a higher AI Brake Skill scalar combined with a lower AI Traction Skill scalar, so that the AI will be braking later than at the default scale at the expense of losing a little time on corner exit).

    Other Development Highlights
    002 (6).jpg
    • Qualifying rules made user-configurable outside of presets in all game modes (including Multiplayer)
    • Parc Ferme made user configurable outside of presets in all Single Player modes
    • Added 'Same Class' private qualifying option for all game modes including Multiplayer
    • Improved CPU performance during weather slot transition (should clean up most if not all those specific hitches and frame drops)
    • Fixed a couple of critical Multiplayer crash sources
    • Fixed Live Track state being lost in Single Player sessions following an Instant Replay
    Licensing Issues - Status Update

In our previous dev update back in June we covered the ongoing issue of officially licensed F1 cars in AMS2, and the rising new conflict presented to us during our attempt to extend our license agreement with McLaren Racing; right after the publishing of that article, we agreed to the requirement of retaining a single official F1 manufacturer in AMS2, and a new agreement conforming to such terms was presented to us which we readily commited to; there has been no progress since however on that being signed into effect by the other party. From the little we have heard from them since, this might have been down to an unfortunately timed personnel shuffle, regardless of the circumstances, until the matter is resolved in some direction we are not able to take any action with regards to these formula cars, which thus continue as they currently are for another game update.

If we manage some resolution on the matter within a short enough time from the upcoming release, the might be another update to reflect this development; if things continue without a clear resolution however our focus will shift to the development of the major V1.7 update, which is currently targeted for later on the year, and any changes around this content will only take place with then.

Once we do shift our focus towards V1.7, things may become a little quiet again as we focus on the integration of the bigger structural changes that we have been working on for this upcoming milestone update for Automobilista 2.

That covers all we had to share for now! We hope this update will leave AMS2 at a very solid state for you to continue to enjoy it, as we retreat to the shop again to prepare for its next big leap!

So happy to get this car finally, I just want to inform you that that steering wheel is not period accurate, they use it for running it nowadays.

    Videos:
In those 2 videos you can see what it used in 1998, just a simple D-shaped wheel with a few buttons
Hopefully there is enough time to change that.

The Panoz is an excellent addition to the GT198 class. Thanks for the update and hopefully the licensing agreements get inked so you can release what you've worked so hard on. Very excited to see what big changes come with the 1.7 update. I've personally been very excited about the possibilities of a mid race save.

On a more personal note folks, for anyone who has tried to reach me recently on has been on hold for anything that relies on the management side of the studio... things are currently heavily bottlenecked as I work on a very scattered schedule dealing with a health issue in the family - nothing new, this has been ongoing on since January already and it´s nothing to worry about as the prognosis at this point is very positive - it has kept me busy outside of the company though and largely unavailable through long stints especially in recent months, so if you have been on hold or haven´t yet heard back I´d ask to please rely on your patience a little longer :)

Rest assured this has little bearing on the development side of things as demonstrated through the year already and again in this upcoming update, the dev team continues firing on all cylinders (some will argue even better without me being a regular nuisance  :hurrayreiza:)

You had me at the picture of the Panoz.

You floored me with the focus on AI improvements.

For me, this is more worthy of a version number. Call it 2.7 if you want.

In all seriousness, I really like the driving and the multi class AI in LMU but, as someone who drives exclusively against AI, I feel completely abandoned by Studio 397 and have no interest in buying their latest (super looking) DLCs.

Meanwhile, you come along with my most requested feature (AI improvements in multiple conditions and addressing the 'trains' issue) and probably the No1 car I had hoped for with little hint of it arriving (time to focus my efforts on that Capri and CSL...).

I'm sorry for the headache this 'mysterious F1 constructor' is causing you, but those cars are of little interest to me and, in no small part, that's because the people at the top setting those restrictions on who can licence what absolutely killed any enthusiasm I might have had.

Your final screenshot... I'll get hyped for that one later when I know what goes with it. I have concerns about the depth of the car roster possible for that era but you have absolutely addressed those concerns elsewhere in the 2005 set (and the Panoz is another huge contribution to that depth). I loved the PCARS2 version of that pack but I'm now spoiled on 60s content by AC, so here's hoping there's enough 70s cars available (real or fictional) to give some diverse grids. It's an instant buy anyway though, don't worry...

(small critique though, please give the door numbers a paint in a more accurate/70s font!)

    Thanks for the update!

Firstly having recently gone through a family illness (actually it's still ongoing) all I can do is send some love your way Renato, it's not easy to balance everything so my thoughts are with you.

Secondly the AI Lines are very intriguing, I changed these manually in RF2 to give each individual AI a distinct driving line of their own and man did that take a long time :D Was fun doing it though and discovering new tricks with what was back then the King of AI with RF2. So yeah these new areas in AMS2 AI sound great and something I'm very much looking forward too, along with the Panoz which looks fabulous.

As ever, keep up the great work Team Reiza :)

This was an area of discussion internally and it's not as simple as modeling a new steering wheel as it would also require full dash-pad remodeling and a new instrument cluster etc..

The base model we received is from SMS which was derived from chassis # 003. This chassis was was born in 1997 and did race throughout 1998 with the upgraded facelift amongst other updates.

As you can see in this video ref

#003 is/was fitted with a flat dash-pad and IMO the sexier unique looking steering wheel we currently have modeled.
#003 sported both single & double globe headlights at various race rounds therefore we decided to enhance the exterior by remodeling the headlights to double globe as seen on factory chassis #006 & #007 at 1998 LM24 and other IMSA rounds + we added the 1998 longtail wing, touched up the rear wing end-plates to be more accurate and remodeled the front dive planes to have MD/LD visual options..

Now this is where it gets tricky and leads us to a conundrum. I've previously seen the 1998 Laguna Seca video you posted and car #5 from research is said to be chassis #003. As you can see it has the alternative steering wheel, bubble dash-pad, separate instrument cluster etc.. Is the research correct, I can not say for sure therefore it was decided to leave what we currently have and run with the modern interior video we have for this chassis #.

I for one think the steering wheel looks out of place in a 90s GT car and doesn't really match up with the other cars steering wheels as well. The car from the other video from the A1 Ring race should be chassis #008 with the same/a very similar steering wheel:

But I get that similar to the Mercedes CLK LMs steering wheel it is probably not feasible to model everything else correctly if all you have is footage of a different steering wheel and nothing else.

On that same note but quite a bit smaller though, is there something planned for the McLaren and Nissans shifting lights?
The McLarens shifting lights go on in the wrong order and the Nissan over-rev and shifting light come up at the same time, while the timing it comes of seems to come quite late as well (shifting at about 7200rpm seemed to be considerably better performance-wise)

Video of the McLaren shifting lights:

As always the update sounds great. The new approach to racing lines for AI and how AI visualizes the track sound on paper as if that might be the final solution to the good old train building issue. AMS2 already has the best AI in simracing to me and I highly apprieciate that Reiza is still putting tons of effort into improving them further. Other modern sims pretty much gave up improving the singleplayer experience a year ago.

Having "class only" qualifying is absolutely amazing. I drive a lot of multiclass races and finally being to recreate how real multiclass qualifying is set up is a very welcome addition.

What I could gather from looking around a bit, the "modern" Panoz steering wheel maaaybe first appeared on the 2002 LMP-1 Roadster and Evo and was later fit onto the GTR/GTP for 2002 and 03. The LMP-1 is still seen using a regular dash display in 2001.

    Pictures:
While it's perhaps not exactly period correct, it is a part used by Panoz and I think the rule of cool can be applied here :D
