0:36 no, the AI does NOT defend against you, it only might seem that way but i did literal dozens of hours of tests at this point even with the newest update and the AI do not react to you approaching the corner and will NOT defend the inside of it ever, nor change their line on a straight in order to break the tow, or move in any way that would put you in a disadvantage. They also will give you a lot more room than you deserve and you can abuse this and push them to the edge of the track. You are racing "around them", not "with them".

Tom you´d do well to focus on providing your observations without confidently jumping to conclusions that will prove to be innacurate - you did that with the comments on AI performance vs player on a straight as evidence of lack of drafting on their part, and you are doing it here. In both cases the observations have merit - on some specific classes and / or specific circumstances player still has an advantage over AI on a straightline, and AI defending their position by covering the inside line happens so seldomly you might not even be sure it even happens; but you are taking those valid observations to wrongly conclude there is a problem with AI drafting and that there are no defensive moves made by the AI when that is not the case.

Fact is, the AI the do defend and move over to cover the inside - they have just been set to do that very sparsely atm, and the reason for that being that with so many adjustments being made to improve their ability to overtake, throwing that extra variable would be counter-productive to assessing the changes we are making. There are likewise several other AI functions / variables such as driver specific stamina, tire management and wet weather skills that are currently disabled because they detract from our ability tio finetune their tire wear rates & wet weather performance vs the player. Once we´re confident we´ve got those well covered we will re-enable those variables, just like we´ll turn up the rate they engage on defensive manouvers once we are satisfied their gauging of when, where and how to go for a pass is adequate.

In the meantime you´re welcome to share your observations and enquire about specific behaviors so we can get useful feedback on things that may warrant more attention, and we may provide you and other users with a better understanding of how things work and how it might evolve over time, But much like discussions on physics, the moment users go from reporting their observations to conjecturing and trying to guess what is going on is the moment devs tend to check out as there isn´t much value to be gathered nor a point to debating it, especially when made with such misplaced conviction :)

Sounds like you therefore need to lower other settings to achieve a better balance of visuals & performance, sacrifices are required elsewhere to maintain a steady FPS.

Let me get this straight. The only thing that effects my performance is the cars behind at night.... but I should reduce everything else to cater for this. Well, why did they bother making any changes to visible cars at all then? Surely everyone could do exactly what you suggest instead.?

I have so much performance in hand with 30 cars in front at night, but I should reduce everything by a country mile to cater for when some cars are behind? Yeah, your suggestion makes loads of sense /s

    I have the same experience.
When there are headlights "on" (and by "on" I mean that they act as a light source, therefore casting shadows), cars behind are true performances killer (and on top of this I find the illumination of the cockpit from headlights behind quite unrealistic).
I would love to have either:
    - option to limit the rendering of cars behind
    - option to limit or disable the light sources of cars behind

I'm not sure what causes it because the cars in front also cast shadows. The dancing shadows look great at night but I just know that as soon as you get a certain number of cars behind you the performance loss seems disproportionate. I would limit the cars visible behind to about 8 if I had that option and that would be perfect. I would leave the cars visible in front to unlimited in my case. Seeing cars in front disappear just so I can limit the ones behind is not very immersive.

If you’re first, won’t cars behind you not be visible?

100% agree. I would even limit behind to 4 (as I used to have in iracing..) and front unlimited.
I also have no clue why front cars vs rear cars affect performances so differently.
I just noticed that it has something to do with headlights.
Therefore I was supposing interaction between light sources and cockpit, or mirrors maybe..., but that's just an idea, probably compeltely wrong....

Yes, but 12 (which is the minimum) still kills it for me.
In fact, being in front at night in lap 1 (all cars close behind) is just the worst case scenario performance -wise

Can I ask for how long you get these issues? I remember testing it around Monza and the issues stop after roughly half a lap

Well, dont want all cars invisible. Make it selectable,. I'd make it 8 - 10 in my case, but how is that different from the other "Max Vehicles Visible" setting when you are at the back? If anything you concentrate more on whats in front and only directly behind.
Maybe he doesnt want to go half a lap with the issues? Maybe he wants to start the race without the issue? Why does it bother you anyway that someone asks for an option?

Well yes, if your PC can't handle night time racing (which is generally more performance hogging than daytime and that doesn't include cars headlights) then you need to sacrifice other settings, it seems to me you're expecting miracles without compromise. The Max Visible Vehicles settings does work, it's been tweaked to cater for a lean towards more cars invisible behind and that's been clear from the patch notes. So if it's "not working" for you then you need to lower settings, lower your expectations on what you can achieve

Personally I have two graphics files setup, one for daytime where I can jump the settings up and one for night time/rain whereby I've lowered some settings, works great for me on my system and the latter includes the minimum visible vehicles settings.

Could it be further improved? Again, for what seems like the hundredth time now; Yes. I would personally like to see a slider system so we could specifically limit cars behind at all times to a number, or if not more tweaking to the setting, but for now it's working very well for others who are willing to accept they need to lower other settings to accompany it.

Example; If your PC can't handle Cyberpunk2077 in Ultra what do you do? You lower settings, same thing applies here

I have nothing against it, I’m just wanting some details. I trust Reiza and I think they will fix the issues, but they might not be car related in the same way. I’m sorry if I sounded rude

Yes the main performance hog is for about 1-2 laps, then the field spreads out a bit and the issue is much less impacting. especially on the strights. When there is a tight bend instead (cars behind getting closer, the issue rises again).

I am happy to compromise with my 11900k/4090 when playing in VR by directly reducing the number of cars visible behind but I cannot do that without effecting the cars visible in front so asked for an option. Didn't ask for any existing options to be removed or changed. Didnt say the title sucks. Didnt claim its simcade. Just asked for an extra option

This is probably a pretty bad example. You are aware that there was an uproar about performance when it was released right? So.. do you think the devs should have just left it as it was and everyone could simply have reduced their settings? I guess so.. Luckily there are other people who think otherwise so that the title got improved instead. Not sure what your issue is exactly. Quite ironically, I am pretty sure you were one of the people that went ballistic when MSFS performance dropped.. so seems like an odd and somewhat surprising response from you actually, but maybe I got my wires crossed on that one and you were instead delighted and immediately reduced your graphical settings.

Just a thought regarding more than 32 AI drivers.

It does seem like 50-60 is possible but not stable?

Wouldn't a middleground be having an unsafe option to tick like something called "Experimental AI grid". You inform the user that it's not stable and it could crash but for us who are ready to take the risk of a few bugs and crashes it would be very fun but you are still not pushing something that's not finished to those who value stability.

And it could also record the bugs and issues to be able to fix it

I think a startup parameter, like we had with the "-doNotPauseOnFocusLoss" would be ideal, as that would really filter out people who enabled it by accident.
