When driving anything with a lot of power and not a lot of grip, I brake early, shift to whichever gear puts me close to the bottom of the powerband and get back on the throttle before I turn in. It makes for very fast corner exits, but the AI will always rearend you when driving this way.

Neither the AI nor other players online will not be expecting ALL the braking to be done before turn-in point, although that is the safest way for us to go through the corner. Look up trail braking and try to employ it as much as possible as that is the standard technique for setting up the best exit from the apex.

On the flip side, those who live near Sebring know that every day between 2pm and 8pm a literal thunderstorm washes over the state and it appears apocalyptic for 16 minutes and then it disappears as fast as it arrived and all things are back to sweltering swamp heat in short order.

This is not to say that normal organized at events at Sebring are always held under severe storm conditions, but it borders on impossible to spend a week there without seeing at least 4-5 of those micro-storms.

I try to avoid trailbraking in vehicles that don't have a lot of grip, as that usually turns into a drift, which is fun, but results in slower lap times.

I really agree with almost all your points Marc (as usually with all your comments they’re always informative too), but to the point Deadly made about historical content / races on heavy rain without red flags, some examples come to mind, such as Senna’s first win in Estoril in 85 in appaling conditions with Lauda and Rosberg aquaplaning on the straight which was not red flagged, or Boutsen winning in a deluge in Adelaide in 89, with full 2 hour race despite several cars retiring due to aquaplaning on the straight. The great thing is we can simulate properly these 2 races in Ams2 as there’s these track / combos available, so it’s a valid point made that if AI behaviour could be properly simulated that would be a great challenge to tackle. But I agree it’s a minority of races (but higher than 0.1% too) that happened in these conditions without being red flagged (although in the 70s, 80s and 90s races would go on on worse conditions than nowadays). Like you said racing in “normal “ rain is already exhilarating and hands full experience, and even Senna , when asked about how hard was his first lap in Donington 93 in the rain shrugged and said that it was a piece of cake driving automatic transmission car with active suspension and with traction control; he said it was much harder and terrifying had to drive in Estoril the Lotus with h shifter , no assists and huge turbo lag for 2 hours, and that demanded him full concentration not to crash. Also, the great thing is we can try both track car combos in Ams2 and compare the difficulty. That’s why I love this sim.

There was lightning at those races--threatening the spectators in the stands?

No one is talking about removing heavy rain, just thunder and lighting storms :)

And yes, even the heavy rain they raced in back in the olden days would not be permitted today. Today, if the track is a bit damp they need 10 safety car laps to determine if it's safe to start ;)

Considering we have stormy weather without lightning already, the talk that started this all in regard to the puddles is still relevant, the lightning is merely a visual flair to the storm affecting the wetness and the lack of puddles in current versions that were previously an issue

Hi Marc, I was addressing more the following remark about races on standing water you had made on your statement to Deadly : “Show me one historic race where significant standing water was driven through lap after lap and did not result in a spectacular crash that resulted in a red flag.”

So, nothing to do with thunderstorms really. I just tried to pinpoint with the Estoril 85 and Adelaide 89 examples that races were not stopped on these afore mentioned conditions on your remark. I feel that was also Deadly remark too.

Also, I cannot say about the races I mentioned if there were thunderstorms happening or not. But I remember once on a Mil Milhas race (endurance) in Interlagos back in the end of the 80s or beginning of the 90s where thunderstorms occurred ( as this race was held in summer season there, which is notoriously prone to thunderstorms happening from nowhere) and the race didn’t stop. I can tell because me and my dad decided to go away from the stands until weather improved, but the race went on. I believe there was also a one off DTM race in Interlagos where this might have happened too (I wasn’t attending on that one though).

Agree that nowadays there’s sometimes too much sanitizing regarding races that take 10 laps under safety car to start, almost in slick conditions already. That bit doesn’t need to be simulated for me o_O

A great example of the contrast between olden days and today. Could you imagine a modern F1 car with all its electronics submerged and water up to the driver's chest trying to drive into the pits? Someone can correct me, but I don't believe the car would operate at all in that water. The old-school boys were willing to carry on until the engine stalled, no matter what they had to go through.

And one of the most famous F1 races of all time: Fuji 1976
Heavy rain and even fog, they race was started and finished without red flags, though.

Or, almost two decades later: Interlagos 1993
A thunderstorm occured during the race and led to aquaplaning in many sectors of the track, but no red flags. Those cars already had very low ground clearance and were packed with electronics.

Yes, and Monaco used to have urban curbs, sidewalks and lamp posts as the track edge.

It's a simple point. Reiza shouldn't spend a bunch of time to fix something that is an historical outlier until lots and lots of other actually important things are fixed first.

And oh yeah, add full fog to the list along with lightning storms and floods that can be removed from random weather ;)
