    Automobilista 2 V1.6.9.9 is Now Live!
    The new update adds another batch of physics & AI developments along with substantial visual improvements to wet weather & changing conditions; it also expands on our trip through the 2000s with a new pack of exciting mid-2000s GT cars as part of the Historical Endurance Pack Pt2 DLC.

    As is tradition with AMS2, the new DLC content will remain free for all users to enjoy during the initial release days; the DLC itself isn´t available for purchase as Steam does not allow for DLC releases on weekends, but its store page should go live on Monday.

    Users who for whatever reason encounter issues with the new V1.6.9.9 upon release or who might have an imminent league race to run may still remain on the previous V1.6.9.81 by right-clicking on AMS2 in the Steam library -> Properties -> Beta and selecting the previousbuild branch.

    AI WET LINES

    V1.6.9.9 introduces support for AI wet lines, allowing the AI to explore the grippier areas of the track outside of the rubbered racing line which become slippery when wet.

    These wet lines have to be created manually so they will be introduced gradually all the way to V1.7 release; as of v1.6.9.9, these are the tracks with dedicated AI wet lines:

    Wow was not expecting this to drop this weekend. The depth in the 2005 content from F1 to sportscars, to prototypes, and tracks is incredible. Amazing work Reiza!

    Read about it in the dev diary but none of it in the patchnotes ?

    Alright, I took all cars for a quick 5 lap spin around Road Atlanta Short, and was able to get a pretty solid first impression.

    First off, all the cars look fantastic, as always. Reiza definitely has 3D modeling figured out by now, and while we hardly ever get to admire the cars we drive besides replays and the occasional look around in the pits, it’s nice to see how well done these cars are.
    Exhausts are beautifully jittering, cockpits look fantastic, and the cars closely model their real life counterparts.

    In terms of handling, all cars handle beautifully and as expected, with the GT1 cars being very stable in high speed corners, while they try to kill you on the accelerator if your tires are not up to temp yet. The GT2s are easier on the accelerator, but can get feisty in all sorts of corners and on the brakes, which is to be expected.

    Next up, sound.
    I’ve had several discussions outside of these forums about the sound of the "Historical Endurance Pack Part 1", shortly after it came out.
    Back then, the weird sound settings used in the stream over on Overtake.gg made several people question the sound quality of the pack. I tried the pack when it came out and was quick to defend it, as not just the GT1 cars, but also the GT2s and the M3 GTR sounded exceptionally good.
    I did have my issues with the sound of the LMPs, though, given that they sound very weak in cockpit/helmet cam, while giving you an eargasm on the outside.
    The base sound of all cars are very accurate and were clearly not the issue.

    Unfortunately, I have the same issues with this pack, where some cars sound severely dampened, and most are lacking depth during shifts.
    The Spyker seems to be the only car that sounds superb both on the inside, and the outside.
    The Panoz is a close second, only missing a teeny tiny bit of extra oomph during up-/downshifts.
    The Maserati cup car is probably the easiest to “fix”, given that the base sound of the car is phenomenal, and it’s definitely not lacking depth and richness—it’s once again only the up-/downshifts. This one could easily become a fan-favorite.

    For the GT1s, the Saleen is probably the best and also easiest to get right. From what I can tell, it’s simply too dampened, but the shifts seem to have a proper bang to them, so there’s that. The Saleen’s idle sound is heavy and properly menacing, exactly as it should be.
    The Lister is only lacking that extra kick when shifting, the overall sound seems great, including the gearbox.
    Sound-wise, the Milano is the most disappointing in this pack, given how awesome it sounds on the outside.
    Startup + idle sound is fantastic, the gearbox, especially when taking off, sounds close to its real life counterpart.
    Unlike the other cars, shifting in this car sounds very artificial, almost as if the sound cuts out for a split second. The downshifts are very weird, even on the outside, sounding like the engine revs a little too high, and the gear change is “too quick”—I’m having a hard time describing what’s wrong with it, it doesn’t sound realistic, though.

    The Gilette sounds like a proper V6, a little more tame, but generally quite good. On the outside, shifts could use a little enhancement, but other than that, sounds great.

    In short, all cars sound great on the outside, with the Gilette and the Maserati needing a little more oomph during shifts.
    The base sound of all cars is close to perfect, no clear mismatches or anything like that.
    In cockpit view, all cars but the Spyker are lacking in one way or another, mostly related to boring gear shifts. Getting those right would catapult these cars up to the best in the game.

    I have now taken the Milano 55 on a 14 lap race around the 2005 version of Road Atlanta with a mandatory pit stop, requiring all tires to be changed.
    For testing purposes, I ran the game on a base level M4 Mac Mini via CrossOver.

    In terms of performance, it seems like the game is running ever so slightly smoother than before, maintaining 90+ FPS @ 1080p.

    The AI is beyond a shadow of a doubt at its all-time best. Apart from FCY behavior—which has been a slight issue ever since it got introduced—the AI felt very believable, at times making me forget that I'm driving against CPU-controlled opponents.
    First lap behavior is greatly improved, and a rather bold Lister was able to fend off my attacks right from the start.
    Road Atlanta is well known for T5, a very narrow corner, that, given the previous section of the track, usually only allows for a single car to go through at once.
    The AI form a train through that corner, clear it, then use the slipstream of the car in front, and fan out to prepare an attack into T6, just like any real driver would do.
    Pit stops worked flawlessly too, with P1 completely lucking out. He had a huge lead over all other cars, then, shortly before his stop, a car crashed out, bringing out the safety car (please update the mini map icon for the safety car to use an easily distinguishable label).
    The safety car phase is still the AI's achilles' heel, leading to erratic driving, and the most immersion-breaking feature: ghost cars. Allowing us to make the safety car and other cars solid during that phase, as well as when driving into/out of the pits, would be a huge improvement.

    While I'm having some gripes with the interior sound of the Milano, it drove fantastically.
    As long as you are gentle on the throttle out of slow corners, the car is planted on the track like no other GT1 car.

    All in all, another great update! Being able to test new content before purchasing it is always much appreciated.

    Removed paragraph about Panoz handling issues. After deleting my Automobilista 2 folder in Documents, it behaves as expected.

    with this update, this sim has gained full rights to be called Automobilista 2, as the whole package of physics + ffb has reached or even surpassed the quality of the original AMS1. I always felt it was more like a Project Cars 4 untill today, but the positive shift in quality is finally here now.
    I know the term "game changer" is often abused in the simracing space, but I feel this update is well worth to be called like that. well done guys.

    I think I even saw defending into the hairpin on lap 1..
